Dreamstation 2 Auto-Bipap?

Post by Conrad » Fri Aug 27, 2021 7:50 am

Last year I got a new Dreamstation Auto-bipap machine. Mod # DSX700T11C I been using it in the auto-bipap mode with very good results. Average AHIs less that 2. This machine and my old PR System 1 have been registered with Phillips and are part of the recall.

I've discontinued the use of my machine on the advice of my sleep doctor.

My DME contacted me the other day via e-mail and told me that they have received "a handful of Dreamstation 2s" as replacements for the recalled machines. The email included a link to the Phillips website and info on the Dreamstation 2. After looking the info over I see that the DS2 is not a auto-bipap machine. I called my DME about this and the rep I spoke with told me that if I had a bipap machine before that I will receive a DS2 bipap. Say what? I was VERY clear with the rep and asked her to verify. She doubled down on her statement. I took her word for it but after we got off the phone I called Phillips directly. There is no such animal as a DS2 auto-bipap at this point in time. I called my DME back but didn't get to speak with the same rep. The rep I did speak with suggested that I call my sleep doc and ask him if the DS2 would be suitable for my treatment. I'm waiting to hear back from his office.

The problem for me here is that my original DS is a MUCH more advanced machine than the DS2 but Phillips wants to replace my Cadillac with a Ford Pinto. A new Ford yes, but hardly comparable to the machine that's been recalled.

I'm not sure what to do here. Even if my sleep doc tells me that the DS2 will suffice I'm still not trading up, I'm trading down. After looking at some of the video reviews of the DS2 I can see that I do NOT want one of these.

Advice?

Thank you!!!

You need an RX from your doc for a ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto which is the equivalent to your current machine.

Once you have the RX, talk to your insurance company about the proper replacement machine.

I'm not sure what to do here.
Some of this will depend on what position the doc takes. But I would stand my ground for a bipap.

If worse comes to worse have the doc write another order for the "Re$med Aircurve - Do Not Subsitute".
If the doc won't accomodate its time to find another doc.

Do let us know how you make out.

Another vote for sticking to your guns. You need an auto-adjusting, bi-level machine, period. And given the recall, that means you need a ResMed Aircurve Vauto (which is a nifty machine).

If you sense that your DME (or worse, your doctor) are locked into PR and won't even consider ResMed, let us know.

Thank you all for your responses and your advice. I very much appreciate you all taking the time.

I spoke with my sleep doc yesterday and he said not to accept the DS2. As you all said, I need a bipap and the doc said not to take anything less.

He would be happy to write a new RX for the Resmed machine (he certainly doesn't seem to be locked into using PR. I'm not sure about my DME though).

The issue for me is that since I received my current machine (which I'm not using because of the recall) in October of 2019 my insurance won't share the cost of a new machine till 2024.

I spoke with my insurance company and their view on it is that since it's a manufacturer's issue that they are staying out of it.

Now what? If I had to I could pay for the Resmed out of pocket and hope for some sort of reimbursement from PR (I know, I know), or not.

Thanks again.

Conrad,
If you are going to have to pay out-of-pocket find out what the cash price would be from your DME and compare to various online places. Or also consider a second-hand VAuto.

I have two Philips Respironics (CPAP) machines. Up to me receiving the recall notice at the end of June, I thought I was pretty well set up. I’ve now switched to ResMed. I have a very-well-used ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset, which only cost me the price of new supplies (humidifier tank, hose, filters, outlet tube). There are many machines out there, from “I’ll give my old one to you” up to new-with-warranty. (In my case Autosets are more common, so easier to find, but VAutos are out there too).

Good advice, I'll check on the cash price from my DME. Although a used machine might be a good money saving option for some, I'm ok with buying a new machine if I have to.

According to my sleep doc I'm supposed to receive a call from a supervisor from my DME to talk about their screw up when they told me that the DS2 was available in a bipap model. The doc said that the DME was VERY apologetic about giving me the wrong info. Apologetic to him that is, I have yet to hear this apology. I'm hoping that they feel so badly about it that they'll give me a fantastic deal on the ResMed machine that I need. One can hope right?

Pugsy suggested a PS of 2 which apparently solved his problem.

So it should be:
PAP Mode: Auto Bi-Level (Variable PS) Min EPAP 8.0 Max IPAP 15.0 PS 2.0-7.0.

Almost looks like an ASV type of settings.

Send me a private message.

With your settings you could actually get by with resmed autoset. I may have a lead on an older S9 unit that would at least get you by for now.

I ended up ordering a brand new ResMed AirCurve Vauto from The Cpap Shop. Anyone have experience with this store?

I would have preferred to order from our sponsor here, cpap.com, but The Cpap Shop had the same machine for ~$500 less.

The Cpap Shop indicates that they have these machines in stock but they do not. I called about this and they gave me a song and dance about why they don't have em. Ok, that's fine but why does your website show stock on this? More singing and more dancing.

It never ends...

Does our sponsor have stock? They don't specifically say so but their website says that if ordered this morning the item will ship out today.

This usually means they have the item in stock ready to go. They are pretty good about that.
