Hypothyroidism

Post by Hasib » Tue Jun 29, 2021 7:45 am

I have a TSH level of 54. How high it is?
I have been prescribed levothyroxine 150mcg daily. Is it a high dose?
I am troubled by some side effects like headache, specially like something is pressurizing my head all the time.

You need to talk to your endocrine doctor - we can't discuss your medical details except for things related to apnea or Cpap... and what someone else's wife had may not be relevant to your situation = we certainly don't know your full medical history and can't begin to join those dots. Please talk to your doctor about your thyroid condition.

Oh my. That is extremely high. Go to your docs. My levels have to be 3 for me to feel decent. You get air hunger just from hypothyroidism. Let alone apnea.

That level was probably prior to his taking the meds (like an AHI of 50 on testing, vs one of 2 on Cpap).

TSH normal values are 0.5 to 5.0 mIU/L. Pregnancy, a history of thyroid cancer, history of pituitary gland disease, and older age are some situations when TSH is optimally maintained in different range as guided by an endocrinologist.
Your TSH is quite high.
As for how high your dose of medication is...it is what it is but you need to talk to your doctor about that aspect.

Mine was pretty high when I was first diagnosed, too. It can take some time for your doctor to get your dose optimized and get your levels to normal. You'll be getting tested every so many weeks until your levels have become stable at a normal level. If I remember your other post, you were wondering if you really need cpap or whether your sleep apnea could just be due to the thyroid disease. I think there are a number of us on this board who have sleep apnea and thyroid disease which is treated, so the two are not necessarily connected. Are you currently using the cpap?

Untreated thyroid disease can definitely affect your ability to sleep but I don't know that it causes sleep apnea. If you've had a sleep study that shows that you have sleep apnea you would probably want to treat that. Is it possible to rent a machine for a month or two to see how it goes? If you have two problems, why only treat one?

Yes, my AHI is 38.5. In my country both renting a cpap or buying it is very costly. So, i am waiting to see if treating my thyroid problem can solve my apnea too.

Low levels of thyroid causes a high Thyroid Stimulating Hormone level. Thus can create what's called "air hunger".
