I just found out that I have very bad bruxism and tmj

Post by Viper73 » Thu May 20, 2021 11:56 am

Hi,

I just found out that I have very bad bruxism and tmj, my dentist want me to wear a night guard. Can I wear a night guard and use my CPAP machine together. Which mask would work the best with CPAP machine like nasal pillow mask, nasal mask or full face mask.

I hope someone would help me out and thanks you

Avoid any mask that touches your lower jaw.

to follow on with what chunky suggested, go to our sponsors page to see which masks won't touch your lower jaw-

Many do so successfully.

Which mask have you used that you like?

Two birds with one stone?

Tap Pap https://tapintosleep.com/products/mytap-pap
Held by a mouthpiece.
They also have units with both and lower mouthpiece.
Seems like it should work for bruxism. Dunno about tmj though.

Certainly.
Do you not want to wear a night guard?

If you have dental insurance get the night guard they fit better.
Or meanwhile you can get a mouth guard from the sporting goods section of your fav dept store.

fwiw - the tap pap didn't work for me - too many leaks. That doesn't mean it won't work for you but it does mean you have to keep you jaw clenched tight with the bite guard you won't.

You mean a mask doesn’t touch your lower jaw, like a pillow mask and a nasal mask. So don’t use a full face mask. I have all 3 mask. I like using the nasal mask the most.

I have been dealing with severe TMJ for over 30 years. Yes, you absolutely can and should use your night guard and your CPAP together!

The major issue in choosing a mask that plays well with TMJ is to choose one that does not put pressure on the lower jaw, particularly pressure that pulls the jaw back toward the ears. The lower strap on a full face mask, when tightened, can pull the jaw back which moves the ball joint of the jaw back and can aggravate TMJ pain and symptoms.

So a nasal pillow or a nasal mask is best for people with TMJ issues. I use a nasal pillow, along with mouth tape to manage mouth leaks.

Do NOT use the TAP PAP CPAP mask that uses a mouthpiece attached to the nasal mask. The TAP PAP states in its description that it's function is to move the lower jaw (mandible) forward, in addition to holding the nasal mask in place. Mandibular advancement devices are not recommended for TMJ patients. In addition, your night guard will need periodic adjustments as your jaw relaxes, which would be complicated and disruptive to accomplish with a TAP PAP device.

Physical therapists who have special training in TMJ can be very helpful in treatment. They can provide therapy to relieve tension in the jaw, neck and shoulders. They can also teach you exercises and self-massage techniques to help you manage your TMJ symptoms. Biofeedback training can also help you learn how to relax your jaw. You may want to request a physical therapy referral if your dentist has not already given you one.

Best wishes for finding relief and comfort.

The imperative mood confused me.
He must have dropped an " I " if you're correct.

then the nasal mask best answers chicago granny, which i'm too lazy to go pull the quote from.

if folk actually used the quote feature, it would be a hell of a lot simpler.

@zonker Thank you for clarifying.

Using paragraphs instead of "wall of text" would also make it easier to read and understand.

I defer to your experience regarding TMJ and TAP PAP CS being bad for TMJ.

Of their 4 products, myTap PAP is not a MAD.
It only fits against upper jaw so may be still worth a look.
