UK to Ireland - CPAP Custom Costs (Post BREXIT)

Post by Jim R » Tue May 04, 2021 2:59 pm

Hi
Has anyone in Ireland (RoI) sourced CPAP kit from the UK?

I bought my current kit from Intus (was EUPAP) prior to BREXIT and now it chaos for sourcing from UK companies. Intus cannot guarantee the final cost to me if I buy a backup device (i.e. the import duty applied).

Looking at the EU tariff data (TARIC numbers) it looks like respiritory medical devices are exempt from duty ... just wondering if anyone can confirm this.

Also, for anyone in the RoI buying CPAP kit, you can claim back the VAT on the REVENUE.IE (you'll need to set up an account and claim under disability devices) - you'll also need an Irish invoice number (Intus did this for me when I bought my current kit).

Thanks

J

The situation when importing sleep apnea equipment into Eire from the UK was complicated, expensive, and unfair before Brexit.

And it's even more complicated, expensive, and unfair now that the UK is no longer part of the European Union. :(

And 'I hae me doots', Jim R, about the helpfulness of what you have posted,

I would advise any OSA patients in the Republic who happen to read this and need information to contact a body called the Sleep Disorders Support Foundation for the up-to-date position. They are on-line, and you can also call them.

They're on: +353 86 605 3891

And they are open for business from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Hi Rick,

Not sure what you're doubting. The only assertions I made were the following:

1. "Looking at the EU tariff data (TARIC numbers) it looks like respiritory medical devices are exempt from duty ... just wondering if anyone can confirm this."

Due to the recent transition of the UK to "3rd Country" status and it's new liabilities under old EU rules regarding 3rd countries, I was looking up the EU tariff data and locating the applicable group and sub-code for CPAP equipment. This seems to be goods code 9019202000 (obtained searching the online service "https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/").

This goods code is listed as having a 0% tariff rating ... and I was looking for confirmation that I had identified the correct code. That's what the words "just wondering if anyone can confirm this" do.

The reason I was looking for this is that Intus could not guarantee what customs costs would be applied if I ordered a new CPAP unit online as these are outside of their control and in addition to their own invoiced value. If CPAP kit are, as I suspect, exempt from EU tariffs then I can place an order without any additional costs being applied on entry to the Republic ... something that is causing some chaos for other online Irish businesses (or Irish registered subsidiaries of UK companies) using UK depots and suppliers.

2. "You can claim back the VAT on the REVENUE.IE"

I did this myself in early 2020 after purchasing a CPAP unit and mask, as an Irish resident, from an UK supplier using their EU/Irish registered business service (https://www.eu-pap.ie/). I did this online using the Revenue.ie service under my own account and all I needed was an invoice with an Irish vat number on it. The original invoice had a UK vat number on it and Intus provided an Irish one upon request. Anyone with a Revenue.ie account can do this ... see the following link: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/m ... ities.html

(By the way, the SDSF site you so readily espouse has a latest blog entry from 2016, a latest event scheduled for 2019 and this sentence in their contacts page "We are not medically qualified and DO NOT DIAGNOSE Sleep Disorders.". It has some useful - but static - OSA & therapy information, but the site appears to serve mainly as a conduit to commercial services here in the republic ... services that are extremely expensive - I know because I was directed to one of them after titration.)

So, Rick, where is the basis for your doubts? ... all I can see is a thinly veiled accusation of dishonesty. Not impressed with this as a new user of this forum.

PS: I'm guessing you're a fan of Casablanca

There are still snakes in the Emerald Isle.
They sit in government and clerical offices, and have done so for generations.
For many emigrants, the famine was only the last straw.
