Changes in bowels after using CPAP.

Post by Megaman787 » Mon May 03, 2021 2:33 pm

Hi all,

Since this is my first post on the forum, I would like to make it clear that this thread is not meant to troll or joke around, even if the subject matter is a little funny. It could easily be taken that way, so I wanted to get in front of that.

I started using a CPAP for the first time about three weeks ago, at the age of 28. I have no history of any form of bowel issues, other than being a little slow in the restroom.

Ever since I started using the CPAP, my bowel movements have doubled, sometimes tripled in size. It's kind of unreal. Like I said, this sounds funny (and kind of is), but its really no joke.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal?

I've not been having any negative symptoms - No pain, no gas, no bloating, etc. No changes in diet. The only thing that has changed is that my waste production seems to be in overdrive.

Thanks for the knowledge. :)

Make sure that you are putting the mask on the proper end.

Dumped a few pounds I would guess.

Another CPAP success story.

I suspect aerophagia, or swallowing air, even though you said no gas or pain. CPAP can definitely cause it.

If you check Oscar, I will bet your:

1. Flow Limit is way down.

2. Turdal Volume and Flow Rate are way up.

Haha, yeah. I'm hoping that it might aid weight loss. We'll see.

I had to google OSCAR, but that's pretty interesting. I might have to get that set up when I have some energy. I also have my 1-month follow-up appt soon, so maybe they'll see something in their readings. ;)

As for Aerophagia, maybe. I don't know if that would necessarily lead to these, uh, increases though. Who knows, maybe my body just has more energy and is actually working appropriately now.

Well I'm not sure about what you're experiencing but you might be interested in this thread I recently posted: viewtopic/t181958/Has-anyone-experience ... erapy.html

Apparently sleep apnea has been associated with constipation and some people have reported a relief from constipation after using it. Maybe good sleep restores your normal intestinal function.

Are you talking about volume or weight?

Where are you and where were you (pre-CPAP) on the Bristol Stool Chart?

I'll have a Type 4 in double taper mode, please.

Oh, and a cup of coffee...black (while I'm waiting).

Thanks for pointing this out! That could definitely be the case. If some of my bodily functions were being limited by my body not having enough energy, then perhaps this is just how things were meant to function, and I wasn't converting to waste effectively enough.

As for the chart - I was a 3-4 and have maintained being a 3-4.

Yup, very well could be. It feels like the severe constipation that I had developed over the last year is finally clearing up now that my sleep is improving with the CPAP. That just tells you how important good sleep is for us!
