To unplug or not.
To unplug or not.
Hi, I have been using a c-pap for about 17 years and don't have any problems using it, in fact I feel rather guilty as I took to it like a duck to water. I do worry about little things though and have searched the forum and read the booklet that came with my new Resmed 10 I got yesterday but couldn't find an answer. My question is do I unplug it during the day ? With my previous Resmed 10 I would unplug it and take the reservoir out but the metal plate in it would start to rust. So now I just leave it plugged in with the reservoir attached all day.
Is this the normal thing to do ? Thanks.

No, leave it plugged in. I do have a little surge protector between the plug and outlet though - you might want to think about that.

Re: To unplug or not.
I had my first Airsense 10 for over 5 years, and the current one for just over a year.
Both the heating plate and the bottom of the "cleanable" tank are stainless steel, which does not rust.
I cannot vouch for the standard tank, because I insist on the better tank, which lasts for years.

My machine stays plugged in from the day I get it to the day I replace it...5-6 years. What's the point?

Re: To unplug or not.
If there is an impending thunderstorm I'll unplug the CPAP along with the TV, cablebox, computers, etc. A bunch of years ago we had a close lightening hit that fried a good number of electronic devices, melted an outlet, and came close to toasting the wife. I have surge arrestors on most electronic stuff, but most any of those that just plug into the wall (simple MOV's with fuses) likely wouldn't protect for a close lightening hit that gets into the street feed wire to the house.

Re: To unplug or not.
Consider using a power strip with surge protection and use the switch to fully turn it off.
It is more environmentally friendly and reduces fire risk.
Search "vampire draw".

Not sure why you want to unplug? Is it money?
Me thinks if you put a kilowatt meter on it you will see the draw is not that much.
But as Palerider says - you could use a power strip.
IF there is a pending electrical storm I would unplug from commercial power. Since I plug into a jump starter every nite I feel pretty isolated from thunderstorms and have slept right thru many a power interruption.

Thanks, it is on a power strip so will just leave it alone. It's not the money I just wondered about it being on when it's not needed.SleepGeek wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 9:23 pmWelcome to the zoo...

Re: To unplug or not.
I believe I heard that frequent powering up/powering down of hardware puts more stress on it than simply leaving it be, though of course if you suspect an imminent power outage it might make sense to be proactive, and yes a surge protector for expensive electronics is always wise.
