Can OSCAR tell when I fall asleep?

Post by clownbell » Tue Apr 06, 2021 11:27 am

I've always thought it takes me a long time to fall asleep. Can I confirm that by looking at OSCAR data? Thanks for your replies.

I was hoping that one could tell based on breathing patterns. Ah well, it was worth a try.

I have a Zeo somewhere.
It would record sleep stages, and total time asleep and time in each sleep phase.
The input device was a sensor headband--hard to clean,
and now impossible to replace.
An awesome tool, but my sleep patterns were so boring
that I put it away long before the online support was shut down.

Perhaps.

There is a distinct difference between awake and asleep breathing. So much so that the AirSense 10 can use it to turn off ramp, when AutoRamp is being used. For me AutoRamp was very accurate, it's the one feature I miss since moving to an AirCurve as I could always look at the next days data and see when I fell asleep,

For some the differences may be recognisable, others less so.

My respiration rate is considerable slower and more volatile during awake breathing, then it is during sleep breathing. Except during REM, where my breathing is very volatile but my respiration rate is faster than the other sleep stages.

There is a way to get a reasonable idea of wake vs sleep status once a person learns how to zoom in and evaluate the flow rate which is essentially breathing.

Watch the videos here.

You have to do the work though. The machine doesn't have a clue if you are asleep or not so it can't report sleep status at all.
You can get a reasonably close idea if your breathing varies much between awake and asleep. Mine does.

I drew a red line close to where I probably fell asleep. Awake breathing is very irregular....asleep breathing is very rhythmic and smooth without much variation.

Fitbit "claims" that some of their devices can--but it sounds like hot air to me.

Here's another example. (I'm using a different scale on the y-axis.) The heavy breathing at the beginning are me turning over and setting the alarm on my iPad and fussing with my blankets. Then the shallower breathing is me awake and quiet. By around 10:44, I'm asleep. I see the same pattern every night.

We had a cat named Oscar.
He lived to the ripe old age of 19.
Best cat ever.
Whatever he knew--he forgave anyway.
