Seeking General Advice on New Machine

Post by cpapbud » Tue Mar 30, 2021 6:24 pm

Hello,

I'm somewhat new here and I have some questions. I was diagnosed about 7 years ago and just noticed that my original machine (ResMed S9) is giving me the message about exceeding the life expectancy of the motor. I've not been one in the past to give the machine a lot of attention and only once previously experienced enough of a disturbance in my therapy that I went looking for answers and at that point did use Sleepyhead for a time while I was trying to get back to something that worked. I guess I must have just adjusted to whatever changed back then because as I've now looked at the data for the first time with OSCAR I'm seeing that my therapy isn't nearly as good as I thought or that it was during the early years after my diagnosis. I haven't read all the way through the info on what you folks want to see when posting that data so I won't subject you to my lack of homework until I have had more time to study.

What I am interested in is feedback on a new machine and what thoughts there might be about an autoset rather than a standard cpap like I've had to this point. My research seems to indicate that I'll be better off just buying the machine as my insurance is such that I would be not only buying it myself but also potentially paying more for it. I'm considering the AirSense 10 Autoset because I'm thinking that the extra functionality will potentially help with one of the issues that I tried, unsuccessfully it now seems, to address some time back. In brief, I think that somewhere along the line I stopped being good at keeping my mouth closed while using my nasal pillow mask (I've used 2 or 3 different versions of those at different times) but when I tried switching to a full face mask it was like there wasn't nearly enough pressure for that and it all went downhill quickly. So I'm wondering if an autoset machine would help if I were to try the full mask again.

Also, am I correct that there's a range that would need to be set and, if so, is it safe to assume I would start with my current fixed setting as the high end?

As stated, I currently have the ResMed S9 with humidifier and the Philips Dreamwear Nasal Pillow mask. I live in Florida, USA.

Hello,
welcome to the zoo!

what you have planned is very doable. the only minor quibble from me is that you want to get the auto set for her, even if you're a guy. same price and you get an extra algorithm. that's what the "for her" part is about.

you may never need that part, but it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

price is the same.

good luck!

I second the vote for the Airsense 10 For Her. My wife uses it and is doing very well.
It does have a leaf design, however, if you are a guy, you can either leave it alone or add some decals.
You can use the For Her setup or whatever you choose in settings. For Her gives the extra third algorithm.
Resmed Airsense 10 For Her set on the For Her mode.
Phillips Dreamwear nasal cushion mask
My wife is the CPAP user.

The leafy design is actually more unisex than feminine.
Still, you can cover it with a machismo pattern of duck tape.
I suggest camo or diamond plate--very y-chromosome.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like I'm on the right track.

As far as the leafy design, well, even though I am a guy if the thing helps get me a good night's sleep it could be trimmed with lace as far as I'm concerned!
