New to Resmed F30 (adapting from Nasal to FFM)

Post by cyberdreamer » Fri Feb 19, 2021 7:38 am

Hi,

Finally, bit the bullet and bought an F30 after ignoring mouth leaks from Swift FX Nano for almost 5 years. It feels almost like a nasal mask; thanks for the recommendation.

Below are the results of my first night. At 6am I switched to nasal mask (notice the horrendous leaks).

Any tips on how to adapt to the F30? I had insomnia and my CA index more than doubled (no CA in sleep study). :(

TiA!

Two observations:
- why did you go back to the Nano at 6 am? Was it because of the insomnia? It appears your leak rates were great using the F30.
- When using the F30... are you filling the cushion with air before fastening the lower straps? On my F20, I put everything place on my head, without connecting the bottom straps. Then I hook up the hose and start the machine. The cushion starts to fill with air. Then I connect the bottom straps.

Sheriff,

Yes, you are correct. It was the insomnia; sleep felt unrestful like the first night sleeping in a hotel.

No, I wasn't doing that. I hooked it up then turned the machine on and proceeded to adjust the straps. I tightened the straps a bit more than necessary because I could feel the mask filling up like a baloon whenever I inhaled (because of EPR 3) and I wasn't used to this sensation. I'll try your suggestion.

How come the insomnia? Just a new mask thing or something else?
Anytime I tried a new mask type I always had a bit of insomnia the first few nights what with the new feel and/or just headgear adjustments.

That's precisely what I wanted to know. I was wondering if the insomnia could perhaps be caused by arousals due to mouth breathing with a FFM or if it's just a new mask thing.

I'll give it a few more days to rule out new mask adaptation then. :)

Wear the new mask sometime during the day. Wear it a while watching TV, listening to tunes, reading or arguing with the wife. This will help you get used to it.

Updating my experience with the F30. Just woke up once during the night and had great statistics. New mask insomnia is improving and no more horrendous mouth leaks like I had for 5 years with nasal mask. :)

Thank you everyone for their invaluable help! The doctors who are allegedly experts in sleep apnea and charge high fees can't hold a candle to the people here.
