Super High Heart Rate With Sleep Apnea Scared

Post by cpapgirl1318 » Tue Feb 16, 2021 2:23 pm

I realize nobody really seems to want to give you your own medical reports but I finally got a copy of my home sleep study and saw my heart rate went to 162 while I was sleeping! And says 209 TIB. Is this normal for people that have sleep apnea?! Prior to getting my machine I would wake up many times during the night with my heart pounding and I guess it actually was! To me that just seems so frightening to go that high while you’re sleeping and this has happened every night prior to being on CPAP. I did tell my cardiologist about it and he was the one that said it’s probably sleep apnea so he was right but wow! Just wanted to know if this happen to anybody else. Attached pic.

A one time spike in HR is nothing to worry about. There could be a hundred explanations.

You need another doctor or a referral - no MDs here.

It is entirely possible that your cardiologist is correct and the OSA is the cause of the heart rate increases.
With apnea events and oxygen levels dropping the entire body is stressed out and the heart works harder trying to fix things.

I don't remember what my pulse rate was during my sleep study but I think I had some episodes where it nearly doubled when oxygen levels dropped. Makes sense because the heart is trying to re oxygenate the body with more blood pumping.

Not really asking for medical advice just asking if anybody else has experienced that. I do have a cardiologist and my heart was tested I was even on a heart monitor and everything is fine I just think it’s crazy that in my case at least it was all due to sleep apnea. Was just wondering if anyone else experienced that.

From someone who worked in teaching hospitals all my life I'll just say that one cardiac symptom is not enough to diagnose anything, apnea or otherwise, and you need more input from MDs, not random patients, whether or not some have had similar symptoms.

I’ve had a full work up from my cardiologist. Not going off of random patients. I’m not asking for a diagnosis just wanted to know if anyone else has experience a super high heart rate due to sleep apnea as well.

I believe it's very common for untreated OSA patients to experience waking with a pounding heart, and yes, i did a well.

There's one big reason I'll be treating this for the rest of my life ... I had full blown panic attacks when that happened ... at times pretty sure I was going to die.

When there is a pause in breathing, the amount of oxygen in the blood drops. When this happens, the brain perks up and says, “Wait a minute!” It sends signals to the nervous system to tell the blood vessels to tighten and the heart rate to quicken so that more blood gets to the brain. Over time, this is thought to damage the blood vessels that supply the heart.

In addition to damaging the lining of the arteries, it is believed that sleep apnea plays a role in cardiovascular disease by:

Increasing the body’s “fight or flight” stress response that can cause your heart to beat faster and boost blood pressure. Excess stress makes the heart work harder for longer periods of time.
Promoting enlargement of the left atrium.
Triggering inflammation in the body that may promote cardiovascular risk.
Affecting the hormones that regulate appetite, making overeating more likely.
Having lower levels of oxygen in the body means less oxygen to the heart. In people with coronary artery disease, this can lead to heart failure.
