Home sleep study validity

Post by jcpruitt89 » Fri Feb 12, 2021 2:23 pm

Back about a year ago i was coming off testosterone replacement in efforts to have a baby and possibly regain my natural levels. Around this time i also started getting extremely poor sleep. I assumed because my hormones were so jacked up. Multiple awakenings and couldn't fall back asleep. So I decided to get a at home sleep study and the 1st night I scored a AHI of 4. This obviously didn't qualify me for a cpap, so i took the test again. Then I took the test with a little extra help from lunesta then i scored a 6. I still had trouble sleeping throughout the night and I probably only logged about 5 hours of sleep on the test. Now here is where I want to get your advice. I know that our cpap machines false flag events a lot from being awake. Is it possible that maybe i don't have sleep apnea and my home test was a bunch of false flags from being awake alot?

Did your home sleep study even measure if you were asleep or not?
Did you have any little sticky things put on your forehead or in your hair?

Can you be specific about what device was used for your home sleep study. Some of them are highly validated with multiple channels of data, and, some are just "screening tools".

If there were no EEG leads to measure sleep status then the home study had zero way to know if you were asleep or not when anything it flagged was real.

There are different levels of data collection and it sounds like you probably had a Type 3 home sleep study.
The Type 2 home sleep study measures actual sleep. Explained here.

To answer your question...it wouldn't be impossible for some of the flagged events on your home sleep study to be false positive awake events getting flagged by mistake because they had zero way to measure sleep status at all.

I know a guy who had a home sleep study and it flagged some stuff while he was awake in the kitchen getting a late night snack.
