Dysphonia/Functional Voice Disorder with A-pap machine

Post by Rosalina » Thu Feb 11, 2021 5:45 pm

In January of 2019, I had Dysphonia and was diagnosed with Functional Voice Disorder. At the time, I had been using C-Pap for 7 years AND had Acid Reflux on and off for 26 years. My ENT didn't know what caused the Functional Voice Disorder. I wondered if it was caused by the C-Pap machine, but he didn't think so. He gave me an order for voice therapy, but I failed to pursue it. I increased use of the machine for insurance compliance, and managed my acid reflux naturally. (now use A-Pap machine); however, my voice has progressively gotten worse and I am very concerned. I saw earlier posts of someone who also was having a gravelly voice, but didn't have acid reflux. I am scheduled for a video chat with my gastro-enterologist in 2 weeks to see if she could do an endoscopy to make sure there is no permanent damage to my esophagus. I am also scheduled to see my ENT who diagnosed my Functional Voice Disorder originally to see if it has gotten worse. I am wondering if I should consider a mouth device instead of A-pap. Has anyone else had changes in their voice since using C-pap or A-pap and has anyone had a mouth device for sleep apnea? It's more likely the acid reflux, but I am still wondering...could be both!

It's very common to have acid reflux when you have sleep apnea.

I've seen reports of people whose reflux subsided after starting xPAP therapy. Mine hasn't improved but my therapy is still not good; lots of leaks.

How's your PAP therapy?
Machine: Airsense 10 Autoset (humidity 7, slimline hose) (5 years)
Mask: Resmed F30 (medium) (1 year)
Previous masks: Swift FX Nano (5 years); Dreamwear Nasal (few days); Swift FX pillow (few days)
Sleep study in 2016 with AHI 12 and some oxy desats

It could very well be neither.
[[[My ESP only works within line of sight.]]]
Get the necessary tests, follow through on therapy.
Do not skip cpap, but be sure you always have water in the tank.
RH in my house is 29% right now (winter), and my throat is "off" because of it.
It would be worse without the cpap moisture.
Please note that depression/dysphoria itself may affect your voice.

On the subject of acid reflux... I used to get this bad. A lot. Took omeprazole or some such stuff for it. Quit taking the stuff... And it went away. Never new why. Recently found out that's common with sleep apnea.

I'm guessing successful treatment of the apnea is why my reflux subsided.
