Cpap leaking water all over my chest throughout night

Post by mallgoth666 » Fri Feb 05, 2021 7:41 am

Hi, my CPAP machine is leaking water all over my chest throughout the night and I can't figure out why. There's no leak coming from the hose/mouthpiece connection. Help please, this is so annoying!

Where's the leak coming from? The machine itself or the mask?
Machine: Airsense 10 Autoset (humidity 7, slimline hose) (5 years)
Mask: Resmed F30 (medium) (1 year)
Previous masks: Swift FX Nano (5 years); Dreamwear Nasal (few days); Swift FX pillow (few days)
Sleep study in 2016 with AHI 12 and some oxy desats

Which mask?
Which machine?
What is your humidity setting on your machine?
What is the ambient temperature in your bedroom?
Are you using a heated hose or non heated hose?

Chest as your body chest? That's from condensation happening in either the mask or hose.
Might be coming out the vent holes on the mask or maybe a leak at the long hose to mask hose connection (which should show up as a large leak if that is happening).

Resmed machine. I don't know which style mask but it's a full coverage style that covers my nose and mouth.

And yes, chest as in my chest. My t-shirt is what's getting wet.

Is the machine located above your head? Put it at a lower level.

My machine is located at head-level.

Julie this doesn't help all that much with the new ResMed AirSense machine due to the way the long hose connects to the humidifier water chamber. It simply doesn't drain well at all.
If you were to see the AirSense 10 machine connection you would understand what I mean.
I have had rain out in the hose and putting the machine on the floor and holding the hose totally vertical not allow the water to drain back into the chamber well enough to get rid of the water in the hose.

I have done this in the middle of the night and it simply isn't sufficient anymore just to have the machine lower.
Now the older model machines...yeah, it helped to have gravity on your side but not so much anymore with these newer machines.
When I have had it happen and I held the hose totally vertical I still had to take the hose off and drain the water out of the hose manually onto a towel or something. It just won't flow back into the water chamber using gravity like the older machines would.

Check the above thread for various ways to deal with condensation in the mask or hose.
Posts number 2 and 3 I think.

Are you using a heated hose or not?
Heated hose is the easiest and best option for dealing with condensation in the hose/mask.
If already using a heated hose....turn up the hose air temp.

Which ResMed machine model? AirSense 10 or S9?

Having the machine lower than your head is unlikely to make that big of a difference but is worth trying.
If you have the AirSense model...from my own past experience it didn't help at all to have the machine even on the floor and the hose totally vertical.

So .....
what is the temperature for the air in the heated hose and what is the ambient temperature in your bedroom?

Also make sure there isn't a hole in the hose or poor connection in the area of your chest where the water seems to be going.
It shouldn't be allowing condensation to leak out. Normally the condensation just makes a lot of noise and shouldn't be leaking onto your chest.

60 degrees is too cold for me.
How is the hose routed between machine and mask?
A cold room will increase rainout--especially in an unheated hose.
Maybe you need a hose cozy. Padacheek makes a nice fleece one.
One of her mask liners might help catch any water that gets into the mask.

Chunkyfrog, I have a heated hose.
