Philips System One 560P Keep or Upgrade?

Hello!
I've owned the System One for the last 6 years. I was not compliant with it until recently when I had a septoplasty which made it more comfortable for me to regularly wear the nasal pillow mask.
I am now 100% compliant and am getting a full night sleep!

My doctor recently had me do an at home sleep study and confirmed that I still need CPAP. They connected me with company who was going to charge $300 for the first visit which includes the first few months of supllies then it would be $85/month for 13 months to get a machine like the Dreams Station 10. That's over $1,000 for a machine that it looks like I can get for around $600 online! I haven't met my insurance deductible nor do I see myself doing that this year.

At first I was excited for the chance of not using my 6 year old machine anymore but now that I see how much a new one would cost me, I'm second guessing.

The System One is working well and I'm considering getting the blue tooth adapter so that I don't have to transfer data via SD card.

My recent AHI has averaged .8 - 3.0 which I think is great.

My question to you all is, am I missing out on any new features of the new machines like the Dream Station Air Sense compared to my System One? I don't need a humidifier. Or, do I just stick with what I have until there are any performance issues?

i'll leave to others to promote "the latest and greatest". that's not my concern. my concern IS that you have a machine that is 6 years old. that right there is tempting fate.

i would suggest you get a new machine and save your current one as a backup.

and if you can afford to go "out of pocket" rather than insurance, that would be a good way to go. you can go the used route. there is https://www.secondwindcpap.com/. or forum friend lsat sells secondhand machines himself.

whatever you decide i hope you do it soon. these machines have a nasty habit of breaking down on a friday night, particularly on a holiday weekend. a backup is pretty much what us old timers here all have.

That's what I would do. In fact, I did buy a gently used machine from them.

Keep your old machine as a backup.

If you figure this machine from secondwind will last five years, your cost is about $6.00 per month over the period. Plus, if you keep your backup, you might be able to run this machine much longer figuring the backup is there when this one fails.

I 2nd keeping it as a backup and that you should be looking for another even used as suggested.
IF you are happy with the algorithm of the brand you have stick with it.

Another place to look is Craigslist under Health and Beauty near you.

Just don't pay insurance price for new or used and make sure it works before you leave. Any supplies like mask or hose should be in an unopened sealed plastic bag. HTH

You mentioned you were not very compliant with your original machine until recently?

I have 12,600+ hrs on my 4+ year old CPAP. I'm hopeful that I'll get another 2-4 years out of it (knock on wood).

How many total hours do you have on your machine? If you were not very compliant...maybe your original machine does not have that many hours on it...and will last another 5 years??

Anyway, just a thought about keeping your current machine - as you're comfortable with it...and it seems to be doing its job in treating your condition.

Just for shits & giggles, the next time you go see your doc...ask him if he earns any type of referral bonus or another form of compensation for recommending the company he connected you with. It happens ALL the time in the medical field!

Not really any new features worth talking about. SmartRamp which is promoted as knowing when you likely fall asleep is new and will end ramp early if it thinks you are asleep.
Maybe a little bit better looking

Otherwise no real change in algorithm or reporting.

Dream Station Air Sense

There is no such thing as a Dreams Station 10 or a Dream Station Air Sense. You are merging the names between two different manufacturers. You really should try to make a better effort to accurately describe your machine so that you will get back more accurate information and so you don't end up getting the wrong machine.

There is the Respironics Dreamstation line, and ResMed AirSense 10 line of devices.

Don't invest any money into your System One, it's 6 years old and the blue tooth adapter won't allow you to transfer the detail data. I'm assuming you're using the the SD Card for detailed data with OSCAR/Sleepy head.

The Blue tooth allows connection from the Respironics DreamMapper app, and is no substitute for OSCAR.

.8 is great, 3.0 not so much.

Most here would not be happy with that. Post some OSCAR graphs and I'm sure that can be improved.

I'm going under the assumption you mean the ResMed AirSense 10 line.

The ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet and ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her are probably the two most popular machines here. They are highly recommended and for the most part you can't go wrong with them, even though you're a him.

Having said that, ensure it is an AutoSet.

Your machine is 6 years old, the typical recommendation is to replace them after 5. Many of us keep spares, so we don't have to go without, should our devices fail. So now is a good time to replace it, but keep your System One as a spare.

Member LSAT is always selling gently used devices, he sells them at terrific prices and has a terrific reputation.

As for the thought that "if this brand works for you don't change" ideas....sometimes newer or different is actually better and people might actually like the different brand and how it goes about doing its job.

I did well on a Respironics machine for 2 or 3 years I guess it was and then I got a chance to try a ResMed machine just for grins and low and behold I actually liked its features even better. It's quieter and I like the exhale relief better and the algorithm that ResMed uses lets me use a lower minimum for the bulk of the night and still get as good or better results than I got with the Respironics at a higher minimum.

It is too bad that people aren't given a choice very often of test driving the various brands available so they can actually know if one brand suits them better or not.

I know of hundreds of Respironics users who switched to the ResMed machines that loved it and were happy they switched.
I know of only one Respironics user who tried ResMed and didn't like it.

This is a really good point. I only have 5,300 machine hours with my current system. I wasn't' compliant because I couldn't comfortable maintain a comfortable fit with my nasal mask. I have a full beard so a full face mask wasn't an option. The septoplasty that I had done in October was a game changer and now I can breath so much better.
I like everyone's idea of using this machine as a backup but I think instead I'm going to keep the money saved for a new machine and ride out my machine that seems like it can perform many thousands more hours.

Thanks for the input. I should have added that because I wasn't compliant for most of those 6 years, the machine only has 5,000 hours on it. Yes, it seems that if I do decide to get a new machine, it would be more advantageous for me to purchase out of pocket through some of the great resources that have been provided here. Thank you!

Do you think knowing now that I only have logged 5,300 hours on the machine makes it less likely to break down? I figure if it does break down I can have a new machine within a week and it wouldn't be the end of the world for me.
All of the comments on here have really helped guide my decision towards keeping what I have until I can more easily pay to have a new(er) machine to buy outright.

Thank you for the detailed reply. You'll have to excuse my ignorance. I haven't been in the CPAP research world until this week and have been in a mad dash trying to make a decision on whether to keep that appointment or to stop and just use what I have.

You're the first to introduce me to OSCAR. I tried downloading it on my MAC and am having issues so I'll have to get back to you on that. Thanks for the insight on the limitations of the bluetooth adapter. Yes, currently I've just been uploading SD card data to the Dream Mapper site.

I'll follow up with OSCAR graphs when I'm able to get it installed successfully. Thanks again!

Thank you! I am curious about a different model and the exhale relief. That's what was keeping me from being compliant until I had my nose surgery. I will figure out how to use OSCAR and share the data with y'all to see what you think.
