My mother developed diabetes Type 2. She was going to anyway, but high doses of steroid to treat polymyalgia rheumatica sped up the process, and her doctors IGNORED her constant complaints of thirst and frequent urination for more than a year

. When she finally switched doctors, her blood sugar was over 800

and she was sent straight to the hospital.
Besides injecting insulin, they taught her how to "control" her diabetes with diet in the hospital. Breakfast consisted of cereal, toast, orange juice and coffee with non-dairy creamer in two of those little plastic cups. Yeah, let's feed a disease of carbohydrate intolerance a meal consisting of all carbohydrates.

Believe it or not, they STILL feed diabetics this way in hospitals.
Ever after, she bought non-dairy creamer by the quart (ingredients are typically corn syrup and canola oil) and poured it on her honey sweetened puffed rice cereal every morning. She wouldn't touch milk or cream (the cholesterol!). When I asked her why she thought it was OK to douse her sugary cereal in more sugar, she said "because they gave it to me in the hospital".
