Prednisone

Post by racefan » Sat Mar 10, 2007 6:17 pm

Does anyone have any dealings with Prednisone? I went to an ENT & he said I have a deviated septum & first lets try some Prednisone & a corto? nasal spray
along with nasal flushes.Man! I tell you while I was taking Prednisone I slept like a little kid again!!!!!!!! Darn it though it only lasted as long as the Prednisone did. What I am wondering is could it have made my breathing that much better to the point that I slept better than I have in years or did it do something else?

I can tell you it is a steroid. I was on it for chemo for a while, and once had a nasty allergic reaction (rash all over) and the doc perscribed it for me.

You can find a ton of information about it on the web, just search for it. It's one of the most common steroids.

it is a good/bad drug. Long term use can really weaken your immune system. Hopefully it's a tapering dose.

Prednisone has a split personality. It can be both a miracle drug and a nasty, vicious drug. It can have HORRENDOUS side effects not just physically but emotionally and mentally as well. On the other hand, it can stop many symptoms ZAP, like almost instantaneously after the first dose. It is a VERY popular drug for treating Crohn's disease. I avoid it like the plague tho it has saved my life on at least one occasion. I've only once had to take it other than via IV during hospitalizations and I've been fortunate to not encounter the nasty side effects. BUT so many of my fellow crohnies have not been so blessed and have really suffered thru the need for pred. It is a real Jeckel and Hyde SCAREY medication!

How are you doing w/your Crohn's, Linda? How long have you had it? I was Dx'd at Mayo Clinic in 1976.

Prednisone is the most commonly prescribed corticosteroid (not 'steroid' as in sports!) and I've had cats on it in tiny doses for weeks at a time. Any med. can have a down side, and this one's no exception, but the benefits definitely outweigh the cons in most cases when an M.D. is monitoring it and you shouldn't be afraid to try it short term. It is pretty miraculous.

I have taken this and I, too, sleep THE BEST EVER with cpap while on prednisone - the reason for me was sinus probs and actually allergies - was very swollen in sinuses and throat - so prednisone is an anti inflammatory and ALSO an antihistamine - I kept telling the drs ONLY time I feel good is the 3 times I was on prednisone over the last year
so based on that I asked for an allergy test - found out I have major allergies and now taking antihistamines and feeling SO MUCH better
so that may be why =- it was for me

I will not knock prednisone for its benefit physically, however, I found that I said things that made perfect sense to me, at the time, and didn't seem inflammatory at all. These same things were very unsettling to my ex-wife. Yes she divorced me. I said things like, 'I really don't know if I love you anymore.' I also said, 'I'd shoot you if it wasn't against the law.' I don't want to excuse myself, but the prednisone made me think I was just carrying on normal conversation. The term 'shoot' to me at the time didn't mean kill just as if I had said 'hit' it wouldn't have meant 'kill.'
If this sounds crazy, I agree.
I would never take prednisone again even tho it was instrumental in getting me off cructhes.

chainsaw, that doesn't sound crazy at all prednisone can cause a steroid induced psychosis in some people where they become paranoid and hallucinate. I have seen it several times in patients. pat

You didn't say what your nasal symptoms were-the good news is that since you responded so well to the prednisone-it may indicate you have a big allergic component to your nasal problems. So the newer non drowsy allergy meds may help. Another drug that has controlled my allergies is singulair (often thought of as an asthma med-but useful for allergic rhinitis). Take singulair every day-flonase daily in spring or high dust seasons. Then use zyrtec when pollen.com sends me an allergy alert. The filtered-heated-humidified air of the CPAP has done wonders for my allergies too.

Steroids help such a wide variety of diseases & symptoms-you could have slept well from relief of any of them.

Probably not strange at all since drugs affect us all differently, but I can't sleep while taking Prednisone. I get hyper, lose my taste buds (hate that), and my eyesight blurs. It also affects my sister-in-law the same way.

Fortunately haven't had to take it for awhile -- but springtime allergy season is coming and I get hives. Yuk.
