mouth breathing in a full face mask

Post by DurtGurl » Mon Dec 21, 2020 1:55 pm

I'm still fighting mouth breathing, tape, and mask leaking and have been doing lots of thinking and have a few (probably very basic) questions. Will a person still get good therapy for sleep apnea if they mouth breath while wearing a full face mask? Given the mechanics of obstructive SA, does SA just not happen when mouth breathing?
Machine: ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet with HumidAir Humidifier
Mask attempts: ResMed AirFit N30i, AirFit F30i and Airfit F30 (all had major leaks at cheeks)
Current Mask: ResMed AirTouch F20 Full Face Mask Complete System For Her

You will not lose therapy out your mouth with a full face mask. The reason most people use a full face mask is because of mouth breathing. Anytime you breathe through your mouth you may develop a dry mouth. Users of FF Masks can have low AHI just like nasal mask users.

I have used a full face mask since I started treatment over five years ago. My six month average AHI is 0.6 with treatment. My untreated AHI was 48. So yes, you can get proper treatment with a full face mask.

I mouth-breate much of the time, use a FF mask, and consistently have an AHI of less than 1.
