Oral CPAP masks

Post by Don D » Thu Mar 10, 2005 2:22 pm

I have tried nasal masks & pillows. Could not get good seal from either. An oral mask by Fisher & Paykel has been suggested. Does anyone have experience with these? What are the pros & cons?

Thanks for your help.

I just got one today with my new apap, so I'll be trying it out for the first time tonight. I tried it on earlier and laid down for a bit and I can tell you that it was ALOT more comfortable than my full face mask, no more mask digging into the side of my nose while I lay on my side and no more nose sores since it doesnt even touch your nose. I'll post more after I try it for a full night.

Don D, I have an Oracle that I rarely use. The interface itself is comfortable enough, but the discomfort of my having to stuff nose plugs in tightly or wear a nose clip - to prevent snorting air leaks from the nostrils - outweighs anything good about it.

If you will click the Search button up at the top of the page and type in Oracle, you'll probably find more opinions on it.

Heated humidification is a definite must, with that much air blowing directly into one's mouth.

I have tried one and it takes a little while to get used to having the thing in your mouth. But the real problem I had was air leaking back thru my nose. It pushes mucus up the nose, probably into sinus passages and is rather uncomfortable. The supplier said I should use nose plugs but I haven't been able to find anything that works and is comfortable

I asked my sleep doc about oral devices in general, and she said the historical problem with any oral device has been the development of mouth sores. That was enough to steer me away from going that route. But, the nose plug issue sounds like a huge issue with the oracle variant for sure.
