Congestion and Sneezing and possible malfunction

Post by walterjohnson » Sat Nov 14, 2020 8:47 pm

I have been using CPAP for about a month. I have been getting daytime congestion and a lot of sneezing that I am sure is caused by the machine. I want this to work, I was diagnosed with 27.5 events/hour and with CPAP this is down to 1-2. So it is working for me. But daytime is often miserable. I am using Resmed Airsense 10 Autosense with HumidAir. I have increased humidity to level 7, if I go much beyond that I read that I would get condensation in the tube. The pressure auto ramps up from 4 to 12. One other thing I noticed, when I woke after about 4 hours (I usually go 4-6 hours) was that the air coming through the nasal pillow felt cold. I did not notice this when I put it on. The screen said it was 84 degrees, so the system might be malfunctioning. Has anyone else observed this? Suggestions/comments?

Even 84 degrees will feel cool to a body that has a temperature of 98 degrees.

Are your daytime sneezing and congestion symptoms worse if you use less humidity?

Get a thermometer that you can stick a little probe into the hose and verify hose air temp. Some digital cooking thermometers will go low enough.

Pugsy - Everything I read had suggested increased humidity (I have not read a lot) so I will give the opposite a go. If that doesn't work then I will get the thermometer to check the machine. Thanks.

You still should take into account ambient local humidity - and if you're set at 7, but live in a relatively humid area (or even season) you could be asking for congestion, etc. Try a lower setting (3-4) and see how you feel. Some never use any humidity at all!

Yes, most of the time more humidity is recommended but there are people out there where more humidity can actually make the cpap rhinitis worse.
So if using a high setting then we usually suggest trying a lower setting.
Now if you had been using a low setting we would suggest higher.

It may take a few days for the nasal mucosa to return to normal so you might not see a marked change right away.

Humidity needs are highly individualized. Some people need a lot and some people don't and it's just another one of those YMMV things that come with cpap.
