Air blowing out my mouth
Air blowing out my mouth
After 11 years on cpap, I am suddenly having a problem with the air blowing out my mouth during the night. My husband used to have this problem, it's never happened to me in the past. It's waking me up all night. The pressure on my machine goes up and it feels like a tornado is blasting into my nose and out my mouth. Very discombobulating waking up like this and it dries my mouth out something awful. I've been taping my mouth like my husband used to have to do but it doesn't really solve the problem, I still wake up with air *trying* to blow out my mouth instead of going into my lungs like it's supposed to. Why is this happening all of a sudden? I'm kind of feeling like my throat might be a little swollen, maybe from the dryer air this time of year or some kind of allergies. Could that be making my throat close up easier? Has anyone come up with any solutions to this problem? I'm starting to dread going to sleep.

Re: Air blowing out my mouth
Either tape your mouth shut or get a full face mask. It's that simple.
Some people use chin straps but they don't always work. Also, learn to keep your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

Thanks, Don.Yes, the old body always seems to change again, just when you get used to it the way it is.
I have the 3m Micropore paper tape, is that the best? Anyone have another they like better?
Is there anything a person can do about swelling in the throat? I've tried antihistamines but they actually dry it out more and it swells up worse.
Why does breathing have to be so hard

Re: Air blowing out my mouth
A while back I read an article from a doctor about the problem of dry mouth or dry throat even when the mouth is taped.
I will see if I can find it again. I thought I saved the link but I can't find it right now. I remember when I read it I sort of scratched my head but then I try to remember the YMMV thing and thought...not impossible I suppose.
Try increasing your humidity settings a little and see if it helps or not. No promises...long shot but it might help.
Any tape that stays secure and doesn't come off will work. Different people have different needs when it comes to tape.
Also do the usual...extra liquids to increase overall hydration and look at your medications to see if any of them might cause dryness issues as side effects. Don't assume that just because you never had a problem in the past that some sort of unwanted side effect hasn't decided to materialize now.
Air enters the mouth because the back door between the mouth and the airway gets open. For some reason you used to be able to keep that door closed by reflex but not now. It's hard to explain and it's more than just a matter of keeping the tongue in the roof of the mouth to block the door but that's the best I can do to describe it right now. I can block that back door with my mouth wide open and stick out my tongue and blow raspberries and not have have the air pressure from cpap exit into my mouth but I can't describe how I do it.
It's a reflex thing. Wish I could describe what I do because I could market it for cheap and still by a new truck with what I marketed it for.

I see you use the Airfit P10. I would get a chinstrap, seems to have solved my issue with mouth breathing. CPAP.com and Amazon have a lot of chinstraps, the one I use now I actually got on Amazon. Or you could try a full face mask.

I have this problem too, and have only partially solved it. One solution is the mouth tape. Another is to reduce the exhale pressure. I found that the air came out of my mouth when I was exhaling only, so less pressure means less air blowing out mouth.

Re: Air blowing out my mouth
After 11 successful years, I would ask my doctor to check for another cause.
A small stroke could affect the mouth and upper airway muscles, even if there were no other symptoms.
Please get this ruled out.

Re: Air blowing out my mouth
Something must have changed.
You might have a sleep position that is creating this (I do). You can use the somnopose app to tell you what positions you are sleeping in when the air pressure goes up high could help determine what is going on (note, it may be a head position, not just a chest position, having 2 phones running it can figure that out).
If it is positional, you can learn not to sleep in that position (or set up something that keeps you out of that position).

I would not tape mouth. I use a sports head band/ sweat band and it works for me
