AirSense 10 Pressure Relief/Mask Fit issue

Post by dachuckster » Sun Sep 27, 2020 9:54 am

Long time lurker, first time poster. My apologies if this has been answered. I tried searching for this issue several times, but I cannot seem to find this in any other topic on the board.

I have been using my Airsense 10 with the Airfit 20 full face mask for about 14 months. After what I assume is the typical adjustment period (30 days or so), I have had a positive experience using my equipment. My doctor is very pleased with the reported performance and I have experienced a significant improvement in sleep, energy, etc.

Recently I experienced an issue with my equipment where I am now getting the angry red face icon for Mask Seal. I noticed that when I turned my unit on, it was immediately at a very high pressure and my mask was almost blowing off my face every time I exhaled.

I tried running the manual Mask Fit and my equipment kept showing an issue with the mask seal. I have a good supply of spare parts and was able to try: replacing the F20 mask cushion, the F20 mask elbow and the Airsense 10 ClimateLine Heated tube, All using Resmed brand parts. I was unable to get the Mask Fit to run successfully. It failed even it I used both hands to hold the mask on my face (not too firmly, just enough to make sure it had a good seal).

After a lot of experimentation, I changed the user mode Pressure Relief to Off and it seems to work. It worked without doing any manual intervention during the mask fit. It also worked after I replaced all the new host and mask parts with the ones I was using prior to this incident.

After reading up on this setting, it seems the machine was working in exactly the opposite manner than what I would expect it to do. If I understand this correctly, the Pressure Relief setting is supposed to make it easier to exhale by reducing the pressure in the tube when you exhale. And my equipment seemed to be doing the opposite.

I am concerned I have some issue with my equipment. I have not played with any of the internal setup/configuration settings (nor do I want to, if possible). Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I have an normal check-in appointment with my sleep doctor coming up in about 9 days. I will be discussing this with him.

Have you asked the dealer about the issue - curious to know what they'd say.

What was the "very high pressure" when you turned on the machine...It should show on the screen. Also...what are your pressure settings? They should show on the screen when you turn on the machine.

Thanks for the responses and I'll record what I see tonight when I go to bed and post the results in the morning.

The thing that concerns me the most is that I have been happily using my machine for over a year and never had this experience before (not looking for a response on that, just venting).

I tried the mask fit last night and the issue continued. Before starting the machine up for its nightly use, I tried unplugging it and starting it back up. That did the trick.

As a retired software engineer, this sure looks to me like an issue with a value in memory getting set to an incorrect/invalid value or possibly a "memory leak". But that is all pure speculation on my part.

In any event, everything is back to normal. I should have thought of doing a restart on the machine earlier. I'll mention this to both my doctor and the dealer and post here if there is anything new form either of the two.

Thanks to both of you for trying the help on this. It is most appreciated.

Chuck

Cold reset is my go-to on practically every thing.
Failure is not only an option--it is an everyday event.
