FIlters are black... but if whoever used the machine before you did was a smoker or had a wood fire in the house, there could be a problem, regardless of what the DME says about newness. But have you tried running the machine without the mask attached for a day to try and get rid of the smell?

I don't think its normal for a CPAP to have a odor. I have had mine for several years now and don't remember or have smelt any odors.

Oh, thought the only white filters were the fine anti-allergen ones... even my old Legacy tank has black ones... I wonder if the 'for her' pink model's are pink?

*lol* that'd be cute wouldn't it... I can't speak for other filters, but the respironics M and prs1 filters the washable foam filter is dark, maybe black, but the fine ones are white.

on resmed s9 and air10 models, the filters are all white, with the coarse ones thicker and fiber-y, while the allergy ones are very smooth and thinner.

Are you using water in your humidifier? If the humidifier is on without water, like if it's in the "auto" setting, or the water runs out then the plastic tank can get hot and give off a bad smell which comes into your mask.

So if you are not using water, make sure that the humidifier is turned completely off. And if you are using the humidifier, make sure that the water tank never runs out of water when the cpap is being used. You can also put water in the humidifier with the humidity setting turned off and you will get only a small amount of "passover" humidification.

If , IF the filters are black when the should be white your problem is the room air since it sucks in the air from the room THROUGH the filter! Then you have a massive problem where you live.

Dave, I have been using Respironics for more than a year and the smell of plastic has never completly subsided. In fact over time I was smelling nothing but plastic all day after usage and this interupted my sense of taste as well. I stopped using the machine over the summer because of this... and only recently began to remember that if you smell something that means you are inhaling something, particles or gases right?! So I'm disappointed once again in the EPA, the AMA and now the FMCSA and associated medical examiners, for forcing the use of a medical device without long-term clinical trials. Don't get me started on the defection the trucking industry is relying on here. There are peer reviewed papers out there that suggest it's not "sleep apnea" that's responsible for drowzy drivers, but rather the general air quality on the roads and in the interiors of vehicles (VOCs and high CO2) that professional drivers are subjected to.

What is it about trolls and fruitcakes that causes them to dig up old threads and post garbage like this?

My vote is for psychosis . .

The mind is a very strange thing, even when normal.
Hallucinations can occur any time--to anyone, particularly under stress.
Anger is very stressful.

I'm glad someone finally said that. Reanimating a years old thread and breathing life into it is very trollish behavior.

To the OP,

Have you been able to clean the machine by running it while you're not using it?

I found that soaking the mask for three hours in 50% vinegar solution helped me with the allergic properties of the mask. Maybe run it with 50% vinegar solution in the reservoir while you're not wearing it. It's not officially recommended to put anything other than water in there, but you might want to try it if you're desperate enough.
