i understand these are apnea events. If someone having mask on and awake for entire usage hours reported, is it possible to have events? or they only can happen when person is sleeping?

These machines measure only air flow. They don't measure sleep status and they have zero idea if we are asleep or awake.
Our awake breathing is very irregular when compared to asleep breathing and often these machines will flag awake breathing irregularities as some sort of apnea event. About 75% of my AHI will be awake breathing or arousal breathing related because of the machine thinking my irregular breathing is some sort of apnea event. A few weeks ago I had an AHI of 9.4 which is unusually high for me so I went in and zoomed in on the flow rate and looked for irregular breathing and the flags. 90% of it was obvious awake flagging happening. It also happened to be a night where I slept poorly because of back pain. Lots of tossing and turning and time awake with mask and machine on.
