Facial Flatulence
What are the best ways of combating the annoying flatulence that sometimes comes from my mask? I’m thinking it’s either a leak or an obstruction of airflow.
Re: Facial Flatulence
Commonly called face farts here...
It's mask leaking causing vibrations of the silicone that are causing the noise.
Mask liners are often used to reduce the annoying noise. You can buy them or make them easily out of an old TShirt kind of material.
Padacheek.com makes some nice ones that last a long time with common sense care and designed for various mask cushions.

this link is for the full face mask liners...she's got another page for nasal mask liners. I didn't know which you are using.

I have found that it is most common later in the sleep cycle when your face gets a little sweaty. If it happens often, you could try a mask liner to absorb some of the moisture. I usually get up once to go to the bathroom, at that time I wipe my mask with a baby wipe.

Cools off the skin, and removes irritants.
Then I turn it over and wipe the mask.

Re: Facial Flatulence
Farts are much more common with FFMs as compared to nasal masks. If he is using an FFM and switches to nasal pillows, he might have a bigger problem that farts, e.g., mouthbreathing and loss of therapeutic pressure.

Re: Facial Flatulence
Sorry I was remiss in mentioning I have a dreamwear FFM. I bought a pack of the liners, but so far not making a whole lot of difference with the face flatulence. Was wondering if anyone had a different idea. Thanks
Re: Facial Flatulence
You might do an extra diligent cleaning of your face routine at bedtime in an effort to limit the accumulation of facial oils and sweat later on in the night which could contribute to that loss of seal which ends up causing the farting.
Maybe even wipe the area where the mask comes in contact with the skin with some sort of astringent.
I wear a mask that is essentially glued to my nostrils and I have to wash my face and then wipe around my nose with alcohol so that the adhesive will stick all night. When I cheat and don't wash my face or do a really good wiping with alcohol then my facial oils will cause the adhesive to fail and the mask leaks.. And I am a woman and my face isn't all that oily to start with. It doesn't take much facial oils to screw up the seal.

Re: Facial Flatulence
Also make sure the mask cushion is free of facial oils. A lot of full face mask users will wipe down the cushion with a baby wipe kind of cleaner in the morning to remove the previous night's oils.
