Sudden change in CPAP

Post by Colorado1 » Tue Jul 07, 2020 8:45 pm

Hi, new to the forum. My Resmed AirSense 10 has been acting up lately; shutting off with a bogus "tube obstructed" message, different sounds, etc. I finally pulled the SD card & located SleepyHead (before I found Oscar or this forum). I see a sudden change in statistics about June 15th. I have been using the machine everynight, and it seems to be working (mostly). But, I've noticed fatigue, afternoon naps, and other signs indicating lack of good rest. I've been on this machine for about 5 years, but haven't seen the rip-off therapist for several years. Any suggestions from the forum before I go seek out a new provider?

Exactly which model machine do you have?

AirSense 10 CPAP
AirSense 10 Elite
AirSense 10 AutoSet

According to your graphs the hours of use have dropped significantly since June 15....is the machine stopping and you are sleeping with the mask on the rest of the night? It's showing minimal to none usage for the most part. No wonder you feel like crap.

Have you tried unplugging the machine from the electric wall socket and plugging it back in and see if the forced software reboot makes any change in anything.

I have a AutoSense10 AutoSet. It has been unplugged several times recently as I have conducted a thorough inspection & cleaning, also to try to read the serial number tag.

The puzzler for me has been that the machine seems to blow air almost all the time (exception is when it trips off with the "tubing blocked" error).

Since you have the AutoSet you should have more detailed daily graphs available. Go back and look at the pressure graphs and usage on the daily reports and see what it is showing compared to what you did or know you did in terms of using the machine.
From June 23 the hours of use are next to nothing so if you are sleeping with it not being on....that's a problem obviously.
If it is just a problem with this graph...that's another thing.
Something weird is going on for sure. If it says you used the machine 1 hour...and you had the mask on for 7 hours...big problem.

Off hand...I think you have a problem with the machine starting to be sick. Something is setting off that tube blocked sensor thing and it shouldn't.
These sensors inside the machine can fail.

Do you have SmartStart turned on or off? If off...might try turning it on. If it's already on...I have no idea what else to offer.

Your hours of use don't line up and you are feeling like you aren't getting good therapy which makes me think you aren't.

I know you didn't want to hear it but I am really suspicious for a sick machine here unless someone else here can think of something else I can't think of.

Thanks for your observations! I will check the Smart Start, but my expectations are low. Your thought that this may be a "sick machine" resonates with me, and it may be time to replace it!

Happy Saturday!
Something I read in the forums made me suspect my mask. Last night, as before, my machine was blowing air but not providing relief. Data reflects this. Around 2:30 am I work up, located an unused mask & switched out the old. Seemed to be improved, I slept better (but not great) til morning. Downloaded Oscar today & looked at the data. Shows little data indicating machine was not working prior to 2:30 am, then an hour and 1/2 of good data. Unfortunately, pressures dropped at that point until recording stopped at 4:15. Didn't wake until after 6. Experiences definitely pointing to a malfunctioning machine, so my focus will now be on getting a replacement.

Again, thanks for the advice here.

Sorry to hear that but they do get sick and up and die on us. It's never at a convenient moment either.
It's why I have a spare machine ....just in case. I figure Murphy's Law will kick in if mine dies and it will be a holiday weekend when it happens.

You might check your local craigslist. Sometimes we get lucky locally. I have done that before. I once got a brand new zero hour Respironics APAP machine for $200 and a 45 minute drive.

Thanks for the comments, espectially from Pugsy! I've learned a lot looking through the various postings on this site.

I finally self-diagnosed my problem to the mask and/or connector to the tube. After replacing both, everything worked properly again. All my stats are good and I am sleeping much better. I was surprised to find that the mask/connector could cause this sort of problem. I have begun looking for a backup machine, and started the process to go back to the clinic where I got my original diagnosis. I hate to spend money paying someone to say "yep, you need a new machine. Please pay us x thousand dollars and have a nice day". Much better to have support from other users, self correct and get to a quick solution.
