How much leak is too much?

Post by grounded » Sat Jun 13, 2020 8:08 am

My leaks, due to mouth breathing I assume, seem to be increasing lately. Waking up in the night with cottonmouth and can see it increasing in Oscar:

Is this worth doing anything about or is it all in the noise?

On ResMeds, leaks start to become a technical problem when they hit 24 L/PM.

As the leaks go beyond 24, it gets increasingly harder for the device to detect events or what type of event.

That doesn't mean that anything below 24 is fine. Any leak is a problem if it disturbs your sleep, or creates an uncomfortable situation, such as excessive dry mouth. And this is where everyone is different.

My own personal guide for leaks, no matter where it's from, is if it doesn't wake me up AND it's not massive and prolonged then I don't really care.

Yours isn't massive or prolonged...so from an impact on therapy effectiveness itself it probably isn't being all that big of a factor.
Now they might be disturbing your sleep or maybe even just waking often from the dry mouth itself is disturbing your sleep and anything that disturbs our sleep is unwanted.

So from a technical aspect...the machine won't really start having big problems sensing, responding or recording events until you get above 35 L/min. You are good there. Heck, minimal time spent above 24 L/min which is an ultra conservative line in the sand.

But it seems to be affecting your sleep quality and causing awakenings and that is not good.
The mouth breathing and dry mouth would be unwanted simply because it is disturbing your sleep even if you didn't make it into large leak territory.

The dry mouth ain't great but I'm not sure whether the cure (duct-taping chin?) would be worse than the disease...

dang it! my post didn't post. :x

i echo lsat. xylimelts can be found in drugstores(rite aid and cvs for sure) in the oral health care section. it adheres to tooth between it and cheek. slowly dissolves overnight and stimulates saliva production.

the other thing i "posted" was this link-

i use this and a firm foam cervical collar. works a treat for me.
