AirSense 10 making noise

Post by jon.koelker » Mon May 11, 2020 4:14 am

I started on CPAP about nine months ago with an AirSense 10 Autoset machine. Have been using it the whole time. Last night I noticed that it was making some some noise, especially upon inhale. My mask is the P10 Nasal Pillows and I use a Ruby chinstrap as well as tape over my lips to prevent air escape from my mouth. At first I thought this sound might be from poor mask fit but as I adjusted the mask I realized that wasn't it - I had a good, quiet seal - the noise was coming from the machine itself. I don't know if this was the first time it's happened - I suspect it's not, because my wife often complains of noise when I know I'm not getting any air leak - but it's likely the first time I was awake enough to notice it myself and try to troubleshoot it. It seems to be coming from the air intake on the left side of the machine. Something similar happened a couple of months ago and seemed to get better by changing the filter, so I did that last night, but to no effect. I also moved the machine from the table it's on to the carpeted floor - no help; then tried pushing some fabric up against the air intake to try to muffle it - still no help.

It seems that this noise comes into play when the pressure reaches its pre-set max, which is 11cm. I have it set to a specified ramp time and during that time the sound isn't noticeable - but as soon as it gets up to to 9 or 10, it kicks in.

At this point, I don't know what to do about this. Do these machines need to be replaced or serviced periodically? What I'm concerned with is that it could be that it's always been like this and I'm just now noticing because I happened to go to bed not very sleepy last night, so I was more aware.

Any insight appreciated.

If your machine is only 9 months old and loud enough to disturb your wife I suggest getting your supplier to review it, possible replace it under warranty. Apart from periodic cleaning of the humidifier, hose and mask the only regular maintenance required is to change the inlet filter (which you have done). The machine should last at least 5 years - many last much longer than that.

Check also if the noise is actually emanating from the humidifier - make sure everything is nice and tight.

Me too, UGH! I have TWO machines that do this. I have tried a ton of interventions and sometimes it quiets down, but it seems to have no rhyme or reason. It randomly makes noise or doesn’t for a while. It’s definitely worst near the air intake. I hope you get it figured out - I won’t have any recourse as my machines are from Craigslist.
