Yawning, wanting to take a deep breath
I have been using a Resair, automatic machine for one month. It starts at 4, then “magically” knows when I fall asleep and begins increasing the pressure as needed. As I am waiting to fall asleep (and that, at least, was one good thing about always being sleepy from sleep apnea- you can fall asleep in minutes when you want to!), I keep wanting to pull in a nice deep breath. The machine doesn't seem to like a yawn to bring in air, but can let me gulp air so that I feel better until I fall asleep. When I wake in the night, the machine is giving me between 8 and 13 and I am breathing fine. The past couple nights, I have turned off the air pressure when getting up in the night, and letting it start all over at 4, because sticking the hose on at 11 is uncomfortable. Am I starting with too low a pressure? Or is there another explanation? (Mask being used: switched to Fit Air 20 a few days ago because Fit Air 30 was leaky and kept me awake. The fit is good. I had the same problem with wanting more air in my lungs with the Fit Air 30. I tried a nasal mask at the shop and had a panic attack.)
Re: Yawning, wanting to take a deep breath
There is no Resair machine..Masks are AirFit..not Fit Air...If you want good advice you need to supply accurate information.

It's probably not necessary to start off at 11, but you will likely find this need for air will go away if you start a little higher. When I used the ramp feature at a low pressure, I would have to do as you describe. You could start the ramp at a slightly higher pressure and increase it till you find a point that you don't feel air starved. Or you could not use the ramp at all and set your pressure range to start at the place you find comfortable.

I get a feeling of needing to yawn and of not being able to get enough air when my pressure is too low. It could be just a half a point, but it makes a difference. I'm not sure what machine you have or how it adjusts, with mine I do better turning off the 'ramp' feature that starts with a lower pressure then slowly works up.

It sounds like your settings need adjusting. It's better not to guess. Data are a good place to start. Why not check out the three links in my signature? The first is a link to Pugsy's Newbies post. It will help you learn how we can help you better. The second link goes to a free program called OSCAR which you can put on your computer to review data from your machine. The third link shows you how to post images from your data on the forum. Why not take a few moments to check them out. When you're ready, post a few consecutive daily graphs and we point you in a direction that may help.

Sleeping on your side prevents gravity working against your airway tissue and pressure on your lungs...you'll see your apnea events drop...put a tennis ball in a t shirt with a pocket on the back, it'll prevent you from rolling on your back. Congestion problems? Use your humidifier to relieve your congestion. I do salt water snorts,if it's real bad. Stop watching sad movies before bed, otherwise it'll take too long to clear out !! LOL
Again, raise the humidifier and pressure gradually, don't expect to have great results immediately. Give yourself time.... Start pressure on the OSCAR software show stabilization in time, unless other things creep in, for one how much time on the machine..6-8 hours at least. You can do 4 but that's minimum. Get into a routine, and if you have trouble sleeping take a warm shower before bed and eat a light snack (BTW that works for me, may not for you ) and pop some bendryl or what ever, Melatonin which is nautral . You have to spend most of the time in REM sleep. Look it up. List your equipment on your profile page and download OSCAR to monitor you progress. It's really beneficial, it really is.
Also read the newbie stickys at the top of the forum page... (I deleted raising minimum pressure... need to see OSCAR results)

Re: Yawning, wanting to take a deep breath
I wouldn't go suggesting increasing the pressure at all until I saw the OSCAR detailed reports and determined exactly what the AHI was/is and the event category of that AHI.
More pressure isn't always the best option and could possibly make things worse.
Make sure that what someone wants to reduce or fix is fixable with more pressure.
If someone is having a primarily central AHI....more pressure won't fix it but it sure could possibly make it worse.
