Sleep Posistion Monitors
Sleep Posistion Monitors
I've been studying my data with Oscar and finding that I have lengthy blocks of time where my breathing is real messed up and where most of my recorded events happen. This is also when most of my numerous wake ups are happening. Other times breathing looks normal. I'm wondering if those blocks of time are related to position or possibly rem sleep. I figured I start with a simple sleep position monitor.
My xpap pressure has been optimized pretty well. Under ahi of 1 most nights.
I have been researching sleep position monitors and was wondering what people have tried or recommend as of late. I see they make a bunch of monitors for baby's also.
I figured out that the Somnopose app can be used with an iphone, ipad, ipad or watch. It also integrates with Oscar. Thinking this would be a good place to start I went to the Apple App Store and cannot find Somnopose. Google it and did not find any info that it is no longer available. Any insight will help.
I have an ipad mini that might get the job done if I can figure out a decent way to wear it. My phone is an android though.
Looking to keep this thread on the subject of monitors. I have another thread going on dealing with the aspects of my therapy.

Re: Sleep Posistion Monitors
So far I have not found an app for an android phone to track sleep position.
I'm thinking Somnopose for ios is not available anymore since it does not come up in a search on the App Store.
I looked at stand alone devices. Seen Beddr that sticks on your forehead for $150. There are also some devices that strap around your torso. All fairly pricey.
I'm realizing that whatever I do I only will need it temporarily to diagnose. It doesn't make sense to spend much money.
A position sensor that mounts to your mask and integrates with Oscar would be ideal and give long term data. I guess that's asking to much.

Re: Sleep Posistion Monitors
When a product drops out of sight there is usually a good reason.
Most likely reasons--the thing does not work, is over-priced, or is poorly designed/breaks easily.
DIY would utilize multiple sensors on skin or clothing, lots of wires, and computers.
Not practical for home use--but a nerd certainly would anyway.

Re: Sleep Posistion Monitors
Which type of events are these? Are you familiar with SWJ?
If the events you are concerned about are obstructive, the easiest thing to do is rig up something that doesn't allow you to roll onto your back. If you sleep on your sides or stomach all night for several nights and breathe without events, you know the problem happens on your back.
Re: Sleep Posistion Monitors
Was hoping to keep this thread on the subject of sleep position monitors. I was able to borrow an old iphone and finally figured out how to get Somnopose app installed and working. Somnopose is not the most straight forward app to use, has it's quirks, but it showed that I really move around a lot while I am sleeping.
A little of what I'm seeing is SWJ but a lot of it is not. This is my thread on the subject:

You should check out RePosa, it's the best position tracker yet.

And in response to ChicagoGranny you write:Rob K wrote: ↑Mon Apr 13, 2020 12:43 pmI've been studying my data with Oscar and finding that I have lengthy blocks of time where my breathing is real messed up and where most of my recorded events happen. I know you want to keep the thread on sleep position monitors, but I think you are dismissing the idea that most of your lengthy blocks of time where your breathing is really messed up are sleep-wake-junk since you self-describe these periods as also having numerous wake ups. Do you remember the wakes and the overall restlessness? Are you turning the machine off and back on more than once during these periods where you think there are multiple wakes? If so, that's more evidence that points to SWJ as the culprit. On the other hand, if you are inferring wakes just based on the raggedness of the data, then it would be useful to post some data so we can see what you're talking about.Rob K wrote: ↑Tue May 26, 2020 4:49 pmA little of what I'm seeing is SWJ but a lot of it is not. This is my thread on the subject:

Also worth noting: on your old (2020) thread that you linked to, you never posted any data. So that's another reason why it's hard to just ignore the idea that SWJ is the primary cause of your lengthy blocks of time where your breathing is really messed up.
As for trying to tease out whether possible REM sleep might be involved: The timing of the bad episodes might help, but again showing us the data would help us determine whether the timing looks like it might be REM. Typically with REM, the episodes start (roughly) 90 minutes into each sleep cycle and the REM episodes typically get longer as the night progresses. A wake after a REM period is actually pretty normal even in people with no sleep problems at all, but some people with insomnia problems can get trapped into prolonged SWJ after that initial normal post-REM wake: In other words, once they wake up after the REM cycle is over, they just can't snuggle back down in bed and immediately get back to sleep within a minute or two. (Most of us don't remember individual, isolated wakes that last less than 5 minutes when we get up the next morning.)
Now back to sleep position monitoring:
Most of the things that can actually monitor a baby's position seem to have a sensor pad that is put underneath the crib mattress.
SomnoPose is still available on the Apple App store---I just went there on my iPhone and found it and downloaded it today (May 12, 2025). However, it only has a handful of reviews at the App store, and the rating is 3.3 out of 5 stars. Also, in order to use it, you have to "wear" the iPhone while sleeping. Might not be an issue for you, but adding more stuff to put on before bedtime would be an issue for me. (There is an Apple Watch version of the app, which would be less of problem in terms of wearing it to bed.)I figured out that the Somnopose app can be used with an iphone, ipad, ipad or watch. It also integrates with Oscar. Thinking this would be a good place to start I went to the Apple App Store and cannot find Somnopose.
Given that the mini is roughly 5.5 inches by 7.5 inches, it seems like finding a way to wear it while sleeping would likely not be easy. And potentially uncomfortable. It's too big to strap on an arm or a leg, and strapping it around the chest or stomach or back seems like it would add too much sensory stimulus for getting and staying soundly asleep.I have an ipad mini that might get the job done if I can figure out a decent way to wear it.
Post the link instead of making us search for it.Looking to keep this thread on the subject of monitors. I have another thread going on dealing with the aspects of my therapy.
