CPAP Newbie Resmed Weezing sound...Ontario, Canada OHIP question

Post by paultn » Sat Apr 04, 2020 10:27 am

Hello Everyone,

I am a newbie to CPAP and just started Therapy on 3/5/2020. I was using a loaned Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset for her and besides trying to find the perfect mask all seemed to be going well (AHI went for 44 at the Sleep study to the machine averaging 0.95)

Now it has come time to purchase a machine and I got the Resmed Airsense 10 Elite (The APAP is only for finding base pressure here as in Ontario we have a program that pays 75% of the cost and they don't cover APAP unless the doctor says its mandatory) Either way the continuos pressure is fine with me.

The problem I am having is my new machine seems to be making a wheezing noise on inhale and even on exhale there is a bit of a whine. It sounds like the motor in the machine maybe? Im on 15cm of pressure if that makes a difference.
I noticed this sound a bit with the loaner machine but I don't think it was as loud (Can't remember) but it is annoying.
Unfortunately I also changed masks at the time of the machine switch so I don't know if the loaner was as loud but the new mask is making it worse for me?

I have noticed that the sound is louder when the humidifier has water in it vs when it is empty.

I made 2 video clips one when the machine is almost empty of water and one when it is filled to just below the max line.
Please advise if you think this is a normal sound at my pressure from this machine or if the machine is defective.

Water tank empty.

Water tank full

Thanks for you help.

Do you have it setting on a pad of some sort?
Might be vibration. Does not take much and you may be extra sensitive.

Return it to where you got it from.
It should be as silent as the one you trialed....there are lemons in all these machines.

Its not currently sitting on anything but my side table, however I did try a mouse pad with no noticeable difference.
It could be I am sensitive  however not knowing exactly what the machine should sound like at a higher pressure like 15 I don't know if I got a lemon or not. I only get funding every 5 years so I need to be sure my new machine is running the way it should.

I do believe that the other one was quieter.
The issue is I switched to the F30i mask at the same time and Im not sure if having the air tubes close to my ears with the new mask are amplifying the sound more than the F20 I had with the trial machine.

There should be no difference in motor noise between pressures of 5 or 15 or 25.

Now there could be a difference in the breathing sounds...those darth vadar sounding noises but in term of machine motor noise...no difference and there shouldn't ever be a whine.

You got a lemon.

BTW The AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her model is listed under "cpap" machines ....you can get it and have your OHIP pay for it just like it pays for the Elite. Some how or other it got listed in the cpap list and not apap list but it's an apap.

I asked for the the Autosense 10 Autoset and was told that because my prescription was written as 2 weeks APAP 6- 20 mode and then set to the 95% percentile pressure CPAP mode. That they will only pay for the CPAP machine and not an APAP. Both my Supplier and my benefits program through work told me the same thing. Dr. needs to specifically prescribe the APAP to qualify. I may buy a used APAP in the future but for now the CPAP seems fine for me as OSCAR seems to show its controlling my Apnea well.

Thank you for confirming. I will work with my supplier to get it changed on Monday. There is a big difference as at 8cm it sounds like rushing air "Darth Vader Breathing" and at 15cm you still get the rushing air but the wine added to it.

Ask for the AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her....not the regular AutoSet.

We have several members here that have done this very thing using OHIP....if the place of business you are using won't do it.
Return the defective machine and tell them you will go elsewhere.

Let me change your topic line so that those members can see it more easily and offer their input.

Check the connection between tank and machine - sometimes it can be off by a tiny bit (the fit) and create noise.

Julie is correct. Sometimes the machine can make a loud sound if the humidifier isn't seated properly. Try pushing it in a bit more, wiggling it a bit.

When I purchased the P30i mask, I did notice a darth vader like noise when going to sleep. It was always gone in the morning. After a few days it disappeared. Don't really know why, but I could have adjusted the mask differently once I got more used to it. So, it could be your mask.

Pugsy is correct about getting the "for her" machine. But you are happy with what you have. For now.

The "for her" is a better machine and 5 years is a long time if your treatment effectiveness decreases.

The DME have even less incentive to issue the "for her" model because the Canada/US exchange has slid from 79 cents a month ago to 69 cents recently. Unless the DME had a fixed price Cdn dollar contract with Resmed, or some similiar foreing exchange protection, they will be paying more.

The "for her" is a better machine and 5 years is a long time if your treatment effectiveness decreases. The elite, I believe, does not allow data capture. Data capture allows more detailed information on your sleep. Detailed information allows for analysis and improvement should it be required. Men like it to.
The Elite is a full efficacy data collecting machine. It records and will report the exact same data the AutoSet reports.

It is the AirSense 10 CPAP model that is NOT a full efficacy data collecting machine. It does only the summary AHI and leak numbers with no graphs on anything at all.

This sounds a bit like the early S9's with the chirping sound that the S9 made. Later models didn't have the problem. You really have to turn it up to hear the situation in your audio. Plus the only difference I notice is a difference in pitch between the almost empty and almost full tanks. That wasn't the case with the S9 chirp.
