Size of Airfit n30i frame?

Post by Ramie » Mon Mar 30, 2020 11:18 pm

Hi all, I'm new here. I'm only 2 months into using my CPAP, and still in the process of finding the best mask. I've tried the Airfit n30i (nasal mask) & the Airfit F20, and have had some trouble with both, but also think I might just need to switch back and forth between nasal and full, depending on things like allergies. Unfortunately, the people who fitted me for my equipment didn't listen to my concerns, and not understanding CPAP equipment well enough to stick up for myself, I went home with the wrong size of at least one part of the equipment.

Now I want to re-purchase an n30i frame & headgear (I had to give my first set back, in order to get the F20 equipment) to go with my extra n30i cushion. I want to do this on my own, because I want it sooner than insurance will cover it, and I don't want to walk into the medical supply store (social distancing and all). That means I can't try it on first, and have to know what size I need when I place my order.

So here's my problem. I don't remember if the standard frame of the n30i that I had 5 weeks ago was the right fit or not. So I found a frame fitting guide online, and compared my measurement to the chart. As it happens, I landed EXACTLY in between the small and the standard frame. Being a side sleeper, I need whatever is on the side of my head to fit snugly enough not to cause leaks, but I also don't want to be miserable in a frame that's too small (not sure what happens when they are too small, as so far I've only been given things that are too big).

So my question is.... has anyone been fitted and told they should wear the standard size of the n30i frame and found out they really needed the small? Or conversely, has anyone been told they should wear the small size, and ended up needing the bigger size? If your measurement was EXACTLY in between two sizes of this style of frame, which direction would you go and why?

Thank you for your help!

I would go to cpap.com and get one of the frame sizes that fits you according to the sizing chart, generally the larger of the two is recommended. If that size doesn't work for you, return it and order the smaller size. Return insurance is generally free from cpap.com, or costs much less than the price of a new mask, which is a very generous and helpful policy. I'm usually on the cusp on the cushion size rather than frame size, between small and medium, and it varies for every mask whether a small or medium is the right size for me, I have to try both, medium first, generally speaking.

I'm currently using a Dreamwear nasal mask (which is, by the way, more comfortable to me than the N30i was, I've tried both...see the LankyLefty's comparison review on Youtube *smile*), and of the small or medium cushions the small works best. Since the Dreamwear I got comes with the "fit pack", I can try both and just use the one that works best. From then on, I know which cushion to order. Similar process for frame sizing, only the fit packs don't include multiple frames unfortunately.

If you have to go through your DME for this, then you may need to get both size frames to try out from them. And, if you can't get the sizes that you need from the DME to try, you can buy the other one that you can't get from your DME from cpap.com, and then you'll know which size fits you the best. We're talking about sleep here, it's well worth spending a few more dollars in the short term for long term comfort and effective therapy.

RogerSC, do you know if the Dreamwear full face mask is compatible with the Resmed machine and hose? In particular, can you use the Resmed elbow connector with the Dreamwear?
