At what BMI does OSA disappear?

Post by AHI » Wed Mar 18, 2020 8:15 pm

I started out in November of last year at 445 lb. I now weigh 337. I still have another 190 lb. or so to go. According to my calculations, I should reach my goal weight around October of this year. Yes, this is fantastical, but three times in my adult life I have lost 200-280 lb. rapidly (with my spreadhseets to document it), so it is easy to lose weight for me.

I was never able to fall asleep without CPAP. Surprisingly though, last week, I fell asleep three times when I lay down to rest without using it, and dreamed all three times right away. Holy cow! My OSA is getting better with weight loss? Can OSA really disappear?

So when I reach my goal weight, will the use of CPAP become obviated?

Will the doctor order a retest once I reach my goal weight? And would Medicare pay for that?

Also, at what point do I own the CPAP outright if I am paying with Medicare? I got it last July, so I have had it now for about eight months.

This is very doubtful. If you are remembering your dreams, that indicates you are waking up right after the dream. The ideal solution is to be able to dream with out remembering them.

This can only be determined by another sleep study.

You will have to discuss the scheduling of another sleep study with your doctor. Medicare will pay for as many sleep studies as your doctor orders. I had four in less than one year and Medicare paid for all of them.

Your machine will be paid off after thirteen months of payments. Presuming you made a payment in July, it will be paid for after the payment this July (the thirteenth payment).

Congratulations on your weight loss! Here is information about CPAP and Medicare:

https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/conti ... re-devices

There’s no way to tell ahead of time whether reaching a particular weight would mean the end of apnea for you. There are plenty of us who are at our medically recommended weight but have apnea anyhow.

Still, your doctor might well be willing to order a new sleep test if you reach your goal. And for some people, the significant change in weight does solve the apnea problem.

This is an example of wishful thinking.
Untreated apnea no doubt contributed to your weight gain.
If you stop using cpap, I promise all the weight will return--plus all their "peeps".
Speaking of peeps--Easter is coming. Those little devils are hard to rebuke.

But those three times I just lay down without the intention of falling asleep. I just was a little tired (muscle-wise, but not sleepy) and needed to rest my bones. It was still too early to go to sleep though. I was just surprised when I fell asleep without CPAP.

Thanks. And thanks for the link. My previous doctor said if I lost weight, there is a good chance I would be free from OSA, or at least have lower pressure settings. We'll see.

You know, I never thought of that. No wonder I was so big. Well, plus I liked to eat, haha.

Now peeps are fun. I had forgotten it was almost Easter.

[In case anybody is wondering, the person who weighed only 4.7 lb. was a dwarf, at age 17:

BMI vs OSA is something of a chicken vs egg thing.
Traditional ignorance had us in the "fat causes OSA" rut.
Many of us know better now, but too many are stupidly stuck in that rut.
As Ron White says, "You can't fix stupid."
Obesity can exacerbate the symptoms, but it is rarely the root cause.

I can only echo what the others have said... it's no guarantee. Excess weight can cause and complicate sleep apnea, but it's not the only possible factor. Speaking for myself, going by the strength of the symptoms, I've had sleep apnea since my teens at the minimum, which means weight isn't the root of my problem. My own weight is finally coming down, but I have no expectation that I will ever be rid of this disorder.

You should let your doctor know NOW that you've lost as much weight as you have. They likely will want to re-test you since an adjustment to your settings may be in order.

Better advice is to monitor data from the CPAP.

Retests are a waste of money and time.
