P10 Mask Leak

Post by zonker » Sun Mar 01, 2020 5:55 pm

well now, this is peculiar. i've been meaning to clean my masks exhaust ports since i've recently acquired a water pick. had one long ago, but got out of the habit of using it and eventually discarded it. but my dentist wanted to to try it again. and it's much less cumbersome now that you just fill the handle rather than a separate tank.

i remember reading here a long time ago that a water pick is very well suited for getting that gunk off of the ventilator screen. i can't remember who recommended this. either the frog or pr. at any rate, it works great! so thanks to whoever that was!

but, whether coincidence or not, this is what my chart looks like after yesterday's cleaning-

screenshot-20200301-154637.png
i slept like a stone and didn't wake up to any leaks.

now, i'm not in a panic about this. and i know one night of data isn't representative. however, i NEVER get leaks like this.

so i have to ask...is it the cleaned vent that made this happen?

I would say not as the leaks look like mouth breathing to me despite your collar scrunchie etc....

Those could simply be mask movement looks. Been there and done that with the P10 and yes it looks like mouth breathing but I tested it and taped my mouth and still had the big leaks and the tape was secure the next morning. No way could I have been mouth breathing.
I would get those sort of leaks when I was needing to shrink up the headgear or get new P10 headgear.

mask is new. i have used the same P10 for close to three years but retired that in december when got a freebie from kteague.

now the headgear is prolly the culprit. i'm not using the original but the <blank>. can't remember what i'm using but dog slobber recommended it. damn, drawing a blank!

i've been using it for a month or so with no prob. anyway, it is an adjustable strap so i'll tighten it up, maybe just a coincidence that it happened after the ventilator cleaning. oscar showed more leaks last night, though not as bad as i'd posted.

i'll tighten it up and see hwo she goes.

Two potential recommendations I've made come to mind:
  1. the N30 headgear retro-fitted on to the P10
  2. the P30i as a complete replacement for the P10

Can't help but think that with the N30 headgear, because they are made of the same material as the P10 headgear, stretching will still require some maintenance.

As they stretch, you will need occasional tightening by pulling it out. Then when washing return the adjuster back.

yeah, that's another area where it CAN stretch out. but i wash the scuncis and trade them out over two nights sleep.

i'm thinking pugsy may have the right of it. i'll tighten up the straps and see what tonight will bring.

1. Resmed makes clips to help tighten the mask. They come free with a new mask, but your DME should have some for free also
2. You need to replace your cushions more often than once a year!

. . . the same cushion for almost 3 years WITH NO LEAKS.
Note: pillow life for the P10 varies with skin chemistry, and other unknown factors.
My skin is oily, so I replace mine every three weeks.
Three years is incredible, if you can make it last that long.
I do cycle my headgear to a fresh, clean one when I get 3 or more ugly leaks in a week.
I wash a bunch at a time, and trash the ones that lose their stretch. (After a year or two)

Haven't you heard? Zonker is a cheap galoot.

Then when the Nasal Pillows no longer perform for CPAP, he cuts off the tip and uses it as chewing gum for a few months.

If he is that cheap, how can he chew?
Dentists are very expensive.
