What do the different Breath Amplitudes mean?

Post by Thumper1947 » Tue Feb 25, 2020 1:21 pm

Reference the screenshot, can someone tell me what it means when for some periods while sleeping the depth of the breaths is greater than other periods as represented as wider bands on the flow rate chart. Is this a different level of sleep, as in REM or is it something else. I see some people post flow charts where the size of the breaths is fairly stable all night, and mine always seem chaotic. Thanks in advance for any insight you might be able to provide.

Can't answer your main question, but would advise you to raise your min. pressure from 5 to 7 and get rid of the snores.

Thanks Julie, I’ll try it out. Still trying to figure out why my flow rate chart looks so chaotic.

Do you spend much time awake with the mask and machine on?

I sleep soundly for the first 5 hours, then I awaken and either I'm in and out of sleep, or I'm awake with the mask on. I usually show 1 or 2 hypopnias in the first ten minutes after I lie down. I fall asleep quickly and easily, but not so fast that I should be having these hypopnias so fast after I put my head down.

I find the same situation in my sleep pattern....I fall asleep very easily and sleep for about 5 hours. During the first hour a get 2-3 hypopnias and throughout the night a get a few more along with some CAs. My AHI runs about 1.5-2.5. I am a very shallow breather and have attributed some of the hypopnias to that.

If you are still awake, they are not hypopneas. It's just irregular breathing while awake. The machine can't tell if you are awake or asleep, so it records them as hypopneas. They are nothing to worry about.

Hereabouts, the breathing events the machine records while we are awake are called SWJ (sleep/wake junk).
