Need help with face mask

Post by LG34 » Mon Feb 10, 2020 5:30 pm

I've always used nasal pillows with my CPAP. My provider told me to use a full face mask if I can't breathe through my nose like with a cold. I bought a Resmed AirFit F20 and haven't had to use it until now. I tried last night and it made really loud noises. I'm sure I couldn't have slept with the noise. It was intermittent which was annoying. The mask part seem to fit although there was pressure across the bridge of the nose. The instruction book said noise was due to the way the hose connected to the mask. I took it loose and connected it again and it seemed to help when I was trying to figure out how to use it. But then when I was ready for bed, I couldn't get it to stop making noise. I changed the machine to full face mask and that didn't help. Any suggestions? Not looking forward to being awake another night.

Also, it bothers my TMJ/TMD if I have to breathe through my mouth. (And it's a big no to Afrin! - not even for 3 days.) Anyone else have that experience? A specialist told me that my jaw issues are because my sleep apnea was not diagnosed early enough. My first sleep doctor told me that she had other patients with jaw issues but she wouldn't look into what helped them. She also thought I had sleep apnea for a long time before diagnosis. She moved and the new doctor has not had any patients with that problem.

The original F20 mask did make quite a bit of noise at the exhaust in the elbow. There are a lot of holes where the air comes out. ResMed revised that mask elbow so the exhaust holes are partially covered..they call it QuietAir. Check to see if you were given the original or the revised. The revised says QuietAir on the box.

Does your CPAP have a full face mask fit option? It literally sucks it to your face for the best fit... You might try that.

I haven't really had an issue with noise on my F20, but the bridge of the nose issue causes me pain. I'm going to replace it with something else as a result.

Thank you! I checked and it is the QuietAir version. I had set the machine for full face mask. After I put the mask on last night, it was noisy. I coughed and somehow that made the mask suck into position like you mentioned. After that it was quiet. I slept 2 hours and then woke up with the bridge of my nose hurting. It was hurting too much I just could not tolerate it. That's too bad because otherwise it fit well. No leaks up around the eyes. I adjusted the straps but it didn't help.

This is a brand new mask and passed the return date. I tried it on when I purchased it but didn't hook it up or sleep in it. Big mistake since it cost $140. Can you sell the mask? Maybe it would fit someone.

If the mask fits well, don't give up on it..try a nose pad or go to padacheek.com for a mask liner.

When I had a mask that irritated my nose, I used a piece of moleskin on my nose to stop the irritation. Moleskin can be found in the foot care section of drug stores and your local Walmart.
