More Tongue Talk
More Tongue Talk
My sleep apnea treatment has been monotonous for years now, so it doesn't take much of a variable to catch my attention. I've been sleeping in a recliner positioned nearly upright for while due to a bum knee that for some reason is more painful lying down, no matter what position. I've been grateful that when sleeping like this I've not seen (nor have any family members) even a hint of breathing issues. Until this past week. Trying to figure out what has changed. I discovered that even though my tongue is secured against the roof of my mouth, when I relax I can hear and feel the flow of air change and feel compromised. When I'm awake I normally have the tip of my tongue between my front teeth as it properly positions my slightly inset lower jaw to avoid TMJ trouble. I've discovered that relaxing while doing this does not change my air flow like having my tongue maybe an inch back does. Almost afraid to try to go to sleep like that because I'm an occassional clincher. At any rate, I'm even more convinced of the value of sleeping in a position where gravity pulls the tongue forward. Guess I'm gonna have to retract my claim I don't need CPAP when upright in the recliner. Shucks. I was almost proud of that.
