How many husband/wife CPAP "teams"?

Post by DivinMercy » Thu Mar 01, 2007 5:53 am

I am wondering if any CPAPers here have spouses also on the machine?

My husband has watched my journey with sleep studies and DX and CPAPing with great support and heartfelt gladness that it is not him However, he is sleeping less and less, urinating at night more and more, has been snoring since he lived with my brothers at college and has had apnea since we have been married, I think (25 years). I remember always poking him and telling him to turn on his side (from supine position).

I have watched with sadness for the last 4 weeks as he is getting less and less sleep, but biding my time This morning he has had it and finally told me to make an appt. It has come out that he is afraid "people" will think he is jumping on "my" bandwagon. Like he is making it up or something, so he will "get" to be a CPAPer also

He wants to know if there are any husband AND wives (or partner and partner) who both use CPAP?

Thanks and God Bless...

-Mary

Yes, ther are some husband and wife pappers. I know my husband needs a sleep study, but he refuses. He still doesn't quite understand why I insist on using my machine every night! I think that if more spouses were tested you would find more husband and wife cpap 'teams'.

My wife and I are both on CPAP, both at the same pressure (16). Unfortunately, she has had a very bad case of pneumonia and has not really had a chance to use hers.

Well, we aren't here at our house, BUT we SHOULD be. My hubby needs xPAP a LOT more than I do! He has snored for years & stopped breathing in his sleep for years. He has high BP, urinates frequently at night and, frankly, doesn't sleep for beans. He's always been skinny as a rake handle and now has gained weight. He drives himself during the day and is a workaholic, but he's slowed down drastically the last 4-5 years and he lays in bed awake for hours.

But he's a bullheaded Frenchman and if I press the matter he will NEVER agree to a sleep study so I've had to tread very lightly on this matter. Just the other day he FINALLY on his own mentioned the sleep problems and weight problems of one of the fellows he worked w/who really had his life turned around by xPAP therapy. I was THRILLED! A real breakthrough! There may be hope of getting him in to a sleep lab yet!!! My son in law is on xPAP and that might be of help too in the long run. For now ... I'm checking into the other sleep labs in the area tho I'm almost positive I'll suggest he go to my sleep lab since they've been so great. Nonetheless, they unfortunately don't have private showers and I KNOW he will NOT like THAT at all! I just wanna be ready when he finally expresses an interest or is ready.

Our local hospital just completely redid their sleep lab and I"m hoping they'll hold an Open House like they have for several of their other new or remodeled facilities AND that I can convince him to go see it. Cross your fingers for me - us!!!!

we're a "team"

My husband and I were diagnosed together and have the opportunity to share the same adventure. We have had lots of laughs as we adjust (we're newbies- only 5 wks on the hose). It's really great that we can commiserate with or cheer each other on depending what kind of night we had.
He promised me that marriage to him would be an adventure; I just never knew how much!

Thank you for your replies so far. I am willing to bet this is very common, both diagnosed AND undiagnosed-but-should-be.

Slinky, maybe your husband will just get sick of not sleeping, as mine finally has. Perhaps he is being stubborn also, as mine was...I wonder if women get help quicker than men do... but that's another thread... And no offense to the men intended....

Jeri, very nice! That would indeed be "almost" fun

This will help my husband, so keep them coming, please.

Blessings...

I think that, in general, we males tend to seek/accept help much less than do women. On the other hand, it's possible that physicians may suspect the possibility of OSA in men more readily than in women, because of stereotypes that it's more prevalent in men.
