Need coaching on using Fixodent

Post by betty303 » Thu Mar 01, 2007 5:06 am

I am a determined mouth breather. I like my ComfortLite 2 nasal mask, but gave it up because I couldn't control my mouth breathing (chin strap, then taping, then chin strap and taping) - no luck. Got painful aerophagia.

Now I have been struggling with various FF mask options (and working with a hybrid), but still not making it more than 1-2 hours a night using the mask.

So... I got some fixadent in an effort to get the CL2 to work, but I need some coaching about how to use it....where do you put it? Do you seal the lips? How hard is it to open my mouth if necessary? etc.

thanks!

I tried the fixodent also but due to the pressure, my mouth would eventually "blow" open. Last week I bought an ace bandage and wrapped it around my head and below my lower lip, actually sitting on my lower lip and the many wraps around the head/cheeks keeps the "blow fish" from happening and my mouth shut all night. You might give that a try.

Good luck.

I use the CL2 as well - and LOVE it. But I was having a fairly high leak rate. It took a while adjusting but I finally found "the" fit.

However, I did run into the "lip flutter" and finally had things adjusted to the point that the ONLY reason for the high leak rate HAD to be the "lip flutter". I didn't have too much of it whilst I was still awake but it HAD to be happening during my sleep.

So .... I opted to try the PoliGrip. I did NOT use a thick layer, just a thin layer from corner to corner of my lips. Worked great! Easy to open my mouth if I wanted to. I don't know if I needed to or not but I did moisten my lips w/my tongue if I did open my mouth for any reason. Once in a great while I might have one little "spot" break loose and a little air escape. I just kind of poked my wet tongue into that "hole" and pressed my lips together and was good to go again.

Once I'd gone thru the small tube I purchased I quit using it. My sleep is good, FINALLY (biggest problem was humidity) and my AHI are all good and I've gone w/o buying a new tube of PoliGrip for 5 nights now and haven't seen much increase in the leak rate so haven't bothered to get around to purchasing a new tube of PoliGrip to at least have on hand.

But then, mind you, I wasn't mouth breathing, I was just experiencing the "lip flutter". One thing I did notice whilst using the PoliGrip tho was that I was inclined to do some "burping" in the morning and once in a while felt a little "bloated" in the abdominal area. Nothing drastic or uncomfortable really.

There is probably an obvious answer for this one - but is there anything I need to be aware of to clean it off in the morning?

I would think this would be hard on the tender skin of the lipes.

Thanks for the advice

I have been using the Super Polident Strips for the past 10 months and they work great in keeping my mouth closed. They are not messy to handle, easy to apply, and easy to get off in spite of how well they hold. And, also in spite of how well they hold, if I really have to, I can pop open my mouth -- like to answer that question my husband just HAD to wait until after they were applied to ask!!

And I've never had any irritation to my lips as a result of using them.

Nor have I had any problems w/the PoliGrip paste, either w/cleaning off in the morning nor w/sensitive, tender or sore lips.

Remember, these products were developed to provide good grip between dentures and the tender tissues of the mouth.
