Please recommend a hose cover for me!

Post by RoboLobo » Sun Dec 22, 2019 1:01 pm

Hi everyone! I have tried a few different hose covers for my 6-foot heated Resmed hose, none of them seem to do a particularly great job of reducing rainout. To date I have purchased a Snugglehose, and one off of Amazon by "Endurimed". Also awhile ago I bought a hose cover with actual insulation from our friends at Padacheek, but it was heavy as heck and is expensive ($42). It got lost in a move, otherwise I would try it again with some clips to my shirt and pillow. But, I thought I would ask the collective brain trust (you folks) if anyone has had luck with a particular hose cover. Thanks very much!

I never need to use a hose cover, as I use the Resmed Airsense 10 heated hose year-round.
It is well worth it.
My naked hose hangs out for all the world to see.
It also scares off other critters, as they think it's a snake.

Hose covers used to be the "go to" before heated hoses;
and it appears that you have tried a range of covers already.
Time to get into the 21st century.

Unfortunately, my Cat Critter likes to attack the snake!
I've gone through several of the heated hoses. My wife insists that the cat is not responsible... it must be me somehow placing small claw or bite punctures in the hose!
I gravitated toward inexpensive Resmed 36810 Slimline hoses, and I now put them away during the day time.

A couple of months ago, I woke up and the goofy cat was chewing on the end of the hose right by my face!

So, I now use the cheap hose with a hose cover on it. That seems to discourage the clawing and biting to some degree. I also put the hose away during the day time.

I use this cover. It leaves very little exposed hose on either end, and so far it's much better.

Wrap double stick tape or bubble wrap strips around it.
Our cats hate both.
Alternatively, keep the cat out of the bedroom.
Most are nocturnal, and like to play all night--bad for sleeping.

Thank you Chunky and Jsmit for the kind responses. I should have also mentioned that I like a hose cover for the aesthetics, ha ha (nothing says sexy and sophisticated as a plastic alien face hugger with a dangling tail on you all night). I have been playing with the humidity level and will continue to do so, there seems to be a fine line between being in the ocean versus the desert. After I acclimated to CPAP I felt much, much better, but definitely out of the zone right now, not sure why. Will keep at it, though. Even a bad night with my mask is better than a night without it!

I tried wrapping the cat in bubble wrap. Bad Idea!!! It really got pi$$ed off!

Alternatively, keep the cat out of the bedroom.
I ran that by the wife. She proposed kicking me out instead!

All good suggestions, but.... the Mrs rules the roost. If I pi$$ her off, NO PLAY, much less all night!

Have you looked at your set up. When the hose is higher than you and the machine you are less likely to have rainout. The instruction manual suggests the set up should have the machine lower than the bed. Alternatively, if you can't do that, then putting the hose higher than the machine helps. If you don't have a headboard to hang it over, a hose hanger can do the job. This can be as simple as a hook or a purchased hose buddy.

JSMIT. ... Cats! Those little bite marks can be expensive. My cat like to get a blow dry while grooming.

I just discovered this thread, looking for rainout issues.

Did the heated hoses solve the rainout problem for you (notwithstanding the cat issue)?

The problem with hose covers is that they don't have a lot of insulation. If you have a mild temperature difference (if it's cool in the room), they may insulate enough to prevent or reduce rainout. My ResMed cover seems to work at my house in the California (mild) winter.

However, if the room is cold enough, the insulation of the cover won't be enough and the surface of the hose will be cool enough to still condense water in the hose.

The heated hose bypasses this insulation problem since the heating is active and regulated.

So... If the heated hoses worked but your problem is the cats, then get a heated hose and wrap it with one of your hose covers. If the cover alone doesn't deter the cats, spray the cover with that "no-bite" spray they sell to keep cats off of electrical cords.

In my case. the heated hose never had any rainout issues. Only the cat issue!

I now us a Resmed hose cover over a model 36810 Resmed non-heated slimeline hose.
Our heat does turn down to the low 60's F at night, and so far no rainout issues. My humidity setting was as high as 4, but I now use 1 due to less post nasal drip.

Finding a hose covering fabric might be a challenge, especially if the cat is young.
I would suggest narrow strips loosely wrapped, with the ends loosely secured.
Try several samples until you find something that does not tempt the cat.
Also place a scratching surface nearby, with toys attached, so the cat has a "yes"
as an alternative to the "no, not the hose".
