Using Medical-grade Adhesive On A Leaky Mask

Post by nekiteflyer83 » Sun Nov 24, 2019 7:08 pm

I have been on a CPAP machine for over 20 years. My machine maxes out the pressure every night. ( 20 ) A dozen times all night long this thing blows out the seal on my mask. The fluttering on my face wakes me up over and over and OVER! My RT has tried a dozen different masks on me. At the pressure of 20, every one of them fail. I am left to try and bury my face hard into a pillow to stop the leaks during the night. This has been quite the ongoing nightmare! Two weeks ago I researched medical grade adhesive, like the kind people use to glue ostomy bowel or bladder stomas / bags to their abdomens. I bought a bottle of one that rolls on - It looks for all the world like one of those old bottles of roll-on deodorant. It wasn't cheap but I was desperate.

This adhesive has fumes that will gag you, but by Golly! It worked! The fumes only last a second or two. Definitely something I can live with in exchange for blessed, uninterrupted sleep! Last night I slept for 12 solid hours! I mention last night only because - for the past week I had quit using the adhesive just to measure the difference in quality of sleep. This adhesive is phenomenal! It washes off very easily with nothing but a warm, wet wash cloth.

Another trick I have learned as a long-time CPAP user is - I put one of those tiny "spot" bandages on the bridge of my nose every night. 25 years of wearing a mask and I ended up with a pressure sore on the bridge of my nose that would not heal. My RT got me a different, newer, state of the art mask that didn't work worth crap but I used it just long enough to get this sore to close. If YOU ever get one, you have to "scrub" the wound ever so gently with dry sugar, rinse, then pat dry. I learned that trick from a wound care clinic. The grains of sugar exfoliate the wound at the same time micro-feeding it to facilitate new skin growth. Now - to keep the wound from coming back, I use the spot bandages.

I am new to this group and not sure about "posting etiquette". Am I allowed to list the name of the adhesive I used? I don't want to sound like I am hawking it or benefit from it. I don't. But the stuff works. And I can not be the only CPAP user who suffers from a leaky mask every night.

Update - NO. I am not selling it. Just want to be "proper" with how things get done on this site. The name of the adhesive is called "IT STAYS" It is advertised as an adhesive for holding up support stockings. I bought mine from compressionsales.com. - Fair warning, the fumes will gag you for a second when you first apply it. I just hold my breath while applying the glue to my face, turn my cpap machine on and begin positioning my mask while it is still ramping up so the air from the machine dissipates the fumes away from my nose faster. A second or two of yuckiness for a night time of uninterrupted sleep.... BTW - I slept 13 solid hours last night! I think I am still catching up from umpteen years of sleep deprivation. :) I REALLY like the fact that this adhesive can be washed off with nothing more than a wet washcloth. Several of the others they sell require a chemical remover, something I don't think the skin on my face would tolerate very well.

What worked for me was adding an anti-leak strap. Pad-a-Cheek makes one for my F20 but nor for the quattro air I had before. That said, I modified an existing strap so that it would work with the Quattro Air (without blocking the vent holes).

I am interested to know what specific product you used in case my issue arises in the future!

I used a smear of Lansinoh to hold a mask to my face.
Next morning, my face was so soft!

Indeed!
There will always be leaks, but a mask liner controls moisture,
muffles rude noises, and feels cozy.

do you put the adhesive on the mask or on the skin?
could you put it on the mask and then leave the mask somewhere to let the smell evaporate away?

are these the spot bandages that have a circular pad in the middle?

can you let us know the name of the adhesive, please?

I apply the adhesive directly to my face. I turn the cpap machine on and THEN bring it to my face so the air from it helps blow away the fumes. The name of the adhesive is called IT STAYS. Got mine from compressionsales.com. The bandages I use are the ones by Band-Aid - tiny, used mostly for blemishes and yes they have a pad in the very center. The fumes only last a second or two coming out of the bottle. As soon as the glue starts to "cure" the smell is gone.

"IT STAYS" bought mine at compressionsales.com

At very high pressure, I was getting leak-alerts when I tried to use those mask liners. But yes - they are very comfy! Just didn't work at 20.

Its called, "IT STAYS" I bought it from compressionsales.com - It is advertised for using to hold up support hose and socks. I LOVE the fact it washes off with nothing more than a wet washcloth.

You guys are wonderful! If this glue helps even one of you, I will feel "useful". :D I answered a couple of the individual comments. Will that make my answer visible to all? The name of this roll-on water based glue is called, "IT STAYS". I bought mine from compressionsales.com. It is advertised for use on support stockings and hose. It is a life saver for me!
Blessings to all of you this Thanksgiving!

I might also mention - this glue, when you pull your mask off in the morning, is still a bit sticky. My 8 yr old dog sleeps at the foot of my bed every night. The first time I used this glue, I bent to give her a hug and a kiss then went into the kitchen to start coffee. When I finally drifted into the bathroom and caught sight of myself in the mirror, I jumped back seriously startled! I had bits of my dog's fur stuck to one side of my face where I had pressed into her to give her a morning hug! I live alone so the only one I alarmed was me! But if you have a spouse or children, you may want to consider washing the glue off first before making an appearance. This glue WILL pick up bits of lint, etc from your bed, too. Hope this helps...

I wonder if the company knows they are missing another target market.
Especially if it is possible to make it odorless.
