Help getting CPAP

Post by 1987meghan@gmail.com » Tue Nov 19, 2019 2:58 pm

Hello, I am in British Columbia and have noticed there is some organizations in Canada that will help someone get a gently used CPAP. I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and my AHI is 14.2 which is just under the 15 AHI that my benefits will kick in to cover the machine. Unfortunately due to some unfortunate events after a car accident I am unable to afford a machine on my own. Is there somewhere for British Columbia that will donate or help with the cost of a CPAP?

Hi from the E. coast... Have you spoken to any organizations there to see who might be able to help... like e.g. the Lion's Club, Sally Ann, etc? What about a social worker who'd know of such places (maybe even some gov't ones included)? Can you afford anything? I only ask because there are places in the US that sell completely refurb'd top line ones for less than new - I have had one such for yrs and it's been great, plus you don't have to pay tons of duty/customs etc, tho' the exchange rate can be a problem. And there are people (there) on the forum who sell directly (no script involved) and if they put "medical device' on the pkge you again don't have to pay for customs. So maybe give us a bit more info that we could use to look into for you.

Also if you look online at BC organizations you could get lucky - there are lots here (for every kind of help... not partic. cpaps) listed in one place.

The BC Medical Services Plan does provide support for those that need CPAP, so long as they meet the eligibility requirements.

But, it's pretty minimal support.

I would consider buying a used device on kijiji. Even though I'm set up quite nice, with my equipment, I routinely check kijiji (as well as FB Market Place and Letgo). I've bought (and sold) a few machines this way.

When searching for devices, I search for CPAP, Apnea and ResMed as I'm only interested in the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet or better. Some challenges when buying used:
  • Sellers often don't know important details of device, such as:
    • proper name and model
    • run hours
    • You'll have to specifically ask them and possibly instruct them how to get information
    • Sellers have unrealistic expectations of value of machine, this is where patience comes in, others have no value what they're worth either.
  • Little mask choices options and fitting opportunities
  • Consider buying masks also on kijiji, look for masks like the ResMed P10, P30i, N30i or Respironics DreamWear as they often ship with multiple sizes.
There are a lot of people who simply could not tolerate CPAP and are selling them.

Should you buy used, you really want a data capable, auto adjusting machine the overwhelming favourite here is: Resmed Airsense 10 AutoSet and Resmed Airsense 10 AutoSet for Her
