Hi,
I'm puzzled. My brother has a ResMed S9 auto which is much noisier than any of the others that I own. We recently traveled together and I was surprised at how different it sounded. (I have a number of them with various hours on them.) The noisy one doesn't have an excessive number of hours. Most of my S9's make a little bit of noise on the inhale but are fairly silent on exhale or when not breathing. The noisy one has a continuous white noise sound, regardless of inhale, exhale, or breath-hold. It's a little annoying. Has anyone else had this issue? If so how did you solve it? I'm willing to help him take apart the machine if there is a fix internally, but would prefer if someone else has done this before and solved the problem.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Give him one of your quiet ones and he can use the noisey one for a backup.

We'd still like to fix it. He's a tinkerer, and I like taking things apart.

Sounds like a good project for two brothers.
Good luck.

For the s9s, the whistling sounds seems to come from the front where the motor wires go through a wedge in the sicone gasket. Sometimes you can gently pull the wires to change the sound.

Here's another 'how to take them apart": https://imgur.com/a/S0ojG
First thing I'd do, though, is pop the machine apart, ie, separate the blower and humidifer. hook the hose directly to the blower, and see if it's still noisy.
If it's not, then you've narrowed the noise down to the humidifier.
Make sure the seal in the lid is in good shape, that's the most likely suspect with a noisy humidifier.
