Mask Pressure Variation

Post by jmay9 » Sun Nov 03, 2019 7:20 am

Hello all!

I began my treatment this past Tuesday. I had been wearing the DreamWear Nasal Cushion up until last night when I began feeling ill with a stuffed nose so I switched to the DreamWear Full Face Mask. There was quite a large jump in pressure going from the cushion to the full face mask.

I am just wondering if this is "normal".

Also am open to any advice you have for a newbie.

Thanks!

Did you change your mask type on your machine to full face mask?

Welcome to the forum.

Some people find that they seem to need more pressure when using a full face mask than when using a nasal mask.
I suspect it has to do with the way the lower straps of most full face masks seem to pull the lower jaw back ever so slightly and alters the airway position a little causing the need for more pressure.

So the increased activity with the use of a full face mask in terms of pressure needs doesn't surprise me any. Not everyone will have the pressure needs change but enough people do that we consider it normal and just part of cpap therapy.
If a person were to use a full face mask a lot and see this sort of pressure needs then we would likely suggest a little increase in the minimum pressure.
For a random rare night of use due to special issues...I would just ignore it.

It is my understanding that both of these masks use the same setting of X1 on the Dreamstation.

Thanks, that makes sense. I hope to get back to the nasal cushion soon as I find it much more comfortable to wear.
