New User - Settings for ResMed Airsense 10 AutoSet

Post by edtan » Tue Oct 29, 2019 7:31 am

Hi all

I was recently diagnosed with severe OSA and the AHI was 41.4. I was given a "free" one-month loan of a Philips Respironics DreamStation Auto CPAP to trial, with the condition that I purchase a mask at a considerable mark-up. I bought the Respironics Pico nasal mask.

After completing the loan, and upon doing some research, I bought a ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet. It is currently being shipped to me.

The following OSCAR results show the last three days of my DreamStation trial. I would be grateful for guidance as to the settings that I should be using for the AirSense 10.

In terms of how I feel - the first 2.5 weeks were rough, in that I would unconsciously remove the mask in my sleep. In the final week I was finally able to sleep with the mask on for the entire duration. I woke up feeling fine and certainly less tired than I do now (without the machine).

Many thanks in advance to all - I have learnt plenty from browsing this forum.

Welcome to the forum.

The auto adjusting algorithm between the ResMed and Respironics machines are different so it's kinda hard to compare one set of settings to another because the machines react differently even at the same settings.

My suggestion for the Resmed in Auto mode.
Minimum pressure 7
EPR 2 or 3 (whichever is more comfortable to you)
Maximum pressure 20 (this isn't a critical setting if you never come close to it anyway).

Check your results and see what happens after the first night assuming you sleep soundly for the most part that first night.

Thank you for the quick response. I will try this out and check back in.

Hi all

I have used the Airsense 10 AutoSet for 4 nights now. I set out below the OSCAR readings from the most recent 3 nights.

I still feel tired after waking up. On the most recent night i.e. last night, I woke up and removed my mask groggily, and promptly fell asleep.

I should also add that I am also trying a new mask concurrently with the new machine - the ResMed N20. The Airsense 10 AutoSet gives me a green smiley face for mask fit, but I note that the leak rate on OSCAR appears to be somewhat high. The N20 also does not appear to be a good fit for me though - the upper sides of the frame cut into the top of my ears.

As always, I would be grateful for your advice as to any changes I should make.

Maybe you just need more hours of sleep.
These reports...one barely with 6 hours of use and the other 2 were a little less than 6 hours.

How much of those hours were you actually asleep? Spend much time awake with mask on?

Do you take any medications of any kind? If so, what?

Mr Frowny for mask fit...he doesn't show up unless you spend 30% or more of the night in large leak territory. Takes a lot of leak to bring Mr Frowny into the picture.
Even your worst leak night above you were only in large leak territory 28% of the night...so you still get Mr Smiley for mask fit.

As for your ears: you can tuck a spread out cotton ball to pad the sore spot for now.
Sometimes we toughen up--hopefully, of course.
Just don't let the sore spot get too much damage.

Thanks. I will try this. Would you happen to have another nasal mask to recommend?

I agree that I need more sleep, although my work hours these days make that difficult to achieve. I do not spend much time awake with the mask on, as I fall asleep quite quickly after turning on the machine.

I take a Telfast (Fexofenadine) 180 mg every morning, but I don't think that affects the sleep?

fatigue and drowsiness aren't common but they are listed as potential side effects.
As is sleeping disorders of some sort.
It may or may not be a contributing factor in your daytime fatigue.
