NEW AutoPAP

Post by clarenceh9 » Tue Mar 08, 2005 8:35 pm

Can the presure be set too low on a APCP? I just got mine and the DME set it at 5 and 20. I was on a BiPAP set at 9 and 13. Seems to me I need the higher starting presure of 9 or so. I have to force my self to take deeper breaths to start out with. I do not have any problems breathing out, just short of breath.

Many find it dificult to breath at levels lower than 6. Others do fine. If you know what your titrated pressure was you might try raising the low side to 9 and see if you have some improvement. Work at tweaking from there.

Good Luck,

Chris

DME and AUTOPAP

Post by clarenceh9 » Wed Mar 09, 2005 3:52 pm

Called my DME today and he told me to bring in my card and he would change the presures. I did not have to take in the AUTOPAP.

Whats happens if I try to change it at home, will the card change it back?

Do you have the info on how to change it at home? If you need to know how, PM me.
Yes the "device prescription" on the card will permanently overide any settings for treatment mode, max/min pressure, and Auto-off alarm you have changed on the machine.

Thanks derek, you have sent me the info on how to change it at home. Does this mean that if I change it I will have to leave the card out or will it let me change it and only revert back when I remove and replace the card? I then will not be able to read the nightly data from the card?

As soon as you put the card in, hit start, the new level sets.

My DME doesn't seem to understand programming via the card and that is fine by me. I am taking the machine in and letting them set it and keeping my card clean. I had already set it to the proper pressure (they told me it was already "fine") but changed it back so they can do it. They decided they needed to change it after all when I asked for my card back (they had it) because the doc will want reports every now and then.

Anyway, do you program the card settings with Encore? Is the standard reader also a writer?

Zees, the Encore Pro software used with some of the Respironics machines can write a "prescription" to the smart card while the card is in the reader. You can change the pressure through the software, change mode of operation from Autopap to straight cpap and vice versa, right there through the card reader. When you take the smart card back to the machine and start'er up, the machine will use the new settings.

Surprisingly, Respironics failed to put a place in the Encore Pro "prescription" changing area to change the C-Flex setting. You still have to do that manually with the machine buttons if you want to change that. I prefer mouseclicking my way through things, even if there are buttons to do it too.

clara, I used a straight pressure machine set at 10 for over a year. When I got my new auto 3 months ago I had same sensation. Feeling of shortness of breath. Guess I was just use to constant pressure. You will slowly get use to lower pressure. Mine is set for 6-18.

Personally I don't tolerate anything below 8 very well... Everyone is different.

I'm like Mikesus - I really don't do well at anything under 8.
