Horrible smell traced to empty humidifier

Post by 2crystalship » Sat Sep 28, 2019 9:58 am

I started having a dream last night that I was in one of my classrooms talking to a teacher and there was this terrible chemical smell in the room. In my dream I kept putting my hand over my nose trying not to smell it and saying that I had to get out of there it was horrible. I woke up I'm trying to figure out what was going on. The first thought I had was was there any water in the humidifier? I had filled it up the night before, but I love my machine so much that I had it on me for 3 hours before I went to sleep while watching TV. Sure enough the humidifier was dry and hot. I am wondering if I was breathing anything toxic?

I wouldn't worry about it. However, keep the water near the bed. If you get up to pee (or for any other reason), top off the tank.

For sure, if you live in Calif! Not the best of things to breath, as you can type odd's are you will live. Clean or replace the tank, don't run it out if water, filling it before sleep will help that. Jim

If water in the tank stands too long, there can grow an invisible slime.
If dehydrated, the slime can get funky.
Washing the tank is enough.
Then air out the tubing, as funk stays there too.

 not sure that would smell any better than a dry tank.

When I wake up in the middle of the night, I have a hard time hitting any thing smaller than a toilet bowl. I doubt I could get much into the humidifier tank.

And I sit down in the middle of the night to combat that problem! What a feat that would be!

At least when you top up the humidifier tank, you have to put the lid down when you're done.

I run my water tank through the dishwasher. I checked to see if it was safe. I rinse well afterwards anyway. I do use a detergent from my organic food store. I use EWG, Environmental Working Group, to check out household cleaners. There are chemicals in cleaners more dangerous than dirt.

Thanks everyone! Actually I just went ahead and turned down the humidifier setting from 5 to 3 and there's water left in the morning. I also read that you're supposed to empty any left over water and air dry the tank every morning so I'm doing that. Another issue is the head gear (I THINK that's what it is) seems to slip around and the pillows must get pulled a little askew. I don't notice but my husband complains that he can hear the air coming out around them. Any advice on how to keep them in place? I don't care about him hearing a little air blowing along with the window and ceiling fans, but if it's leaking out around the mask it's probably not doing all it should....
