Still water

Why does the cpap machine require still water? Could I use chilled instead?

Still water is water that is not carbonated ("fizzy").
You could use chilled water if you must but that makes the heated humidifier work harder and less efficiently.

As far as I know, all of the machine manufacturers specify distilled water. You can actually use any water that is safe for drinking such. The manufacturers specify distilled because some potable water contains minerals which may leave scaling in the tank. If you do get mineral deposits in the tank, they are easy to clean out using a vinegar/water solution as used in cleaning scale out of coffee pots.

ONLY in North American, apparently. In Europe, they do NOT specify distilled water.

What a deceiving title. I was thinking corn or rye and was all ready to get queued up for a couple of quarts (for "medicinal" purposes and such)...
