Waking Up Having LSD/DMT Like Trips
Waking Up Having LSD/DMT Like Trips
I have sleep apnea and wear my mask every night; doctor says everything looks good when he checks the SD card from the machine. BUT, lately, I've been waking up about an hour after I fall asleep, with vivid/bad dreams. I check my oxygen and it's like 91 to 93, then it goes up after a few minutes to about 95 to 96. I try to go back asleep and I see tons of patterns and colors moving around, like a LSD or DMT trip, which can make me very anxious. Does anyone else have these kind of experiences from Sleep Apnea? The only thing that makes sense if my body is struggling to breathe and it's triggering chemicals that make me see things, like I was on some kind of psychedelic.

checking your o2 after you wake up has no correlation to when you were sleeping. to see how low your o2 is when you are sleeping you need a recording pulse oximeter. 91 is not a real low number. you should see a doc about your dreams and feelings. I don't think the cpap would cause it, but anxiety about the cpap probably could.

Please post data from a typical night. Many doctors just want to see 4+ hours a night, and less than 5 ahi. They will call that good even though 2-5 is pretty lousy, half a night is lousy, and a low ahi doesn't say anything about how long or clustered the events might be. There is so much more that can be seen on the graphs, but many doctors don't know that or don't care.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Agree with posting your data. Even if you have one event per hour, if it is of long duration it could be problematic. Also wouldn't hurt to see an opthamologist to make sure something isn't going wrong in your eyes making them react this way. Seeing unusual flashes and halos around lights turned out for me to be extremely high eye pressures on prednisone and undiagnosed glaucoma. My symptoms were not in conjunction with CPAP though.

That could be, since ...
... your doctor is checking the SD card and not you. Almost certainly, the doctor only looked at the summary data and did not look into the detail. The detail might show some long apneas at the time your problems happen.
