Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Dreamstation numbers off during travel
I have been bringing my Phillips Respironics Dreamstation from the US to Japan several times. I note that after arriving in Japan, even if I sleep for say 8 hours, the Dreamstation will show a figure like 3 hours. Plus my AHI and Periodic Breathing numbers are way higher than they should be.
But when I bring the machine back to the US it reads as it always does normally. Has anybody else travelled with their CPAP to a significantly different time zone and noticed this kind of behavior by their CPAP machine?

Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Probably has to do with the time changes and the daily cut offs of data.

Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Respironics machines all start a new 24 sleeping period session at Noon GMT time zone.
It's probably splitting your sleep sessions because of where Japan's time puts you relative to GMT time.
You might show 3 hours on the LCD screen and the other 5 hours (if you did 8 hours) might be in a different sleep session. Overall it will get sorted out and the total hours will even out.

Your data will appear as split sessions until you return to your own bed at home.
Nothing you can do about it--except not look.

You also mentioned AHI changes. When we travel, a lot changes. Bed. Pillows. Jet lag. Alcohol use. Sleeping in a strange room.
All of those things can impact sleep -- whether on PAP therapy or not. If you are interested in diving deeper, I would suggest posting some data from before and during your trip. Is it leaks? Is it pressure? Or is it other things?

Is there a significant difference in altitude? Not sure if it matters, just throwing it out there just in case. I know some machines have an altitude setting but not sure how it might affect AHI.

Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Are the number of hours really wrong, or are they just distributed incorrectly between days? If you're there for a week, the middle days should show reasonable numbers, at least if you kept reasonably uniform sleep times.
As far as a higher AHI and periodic breathing, I know that there are some parts of Japan where the altitude is very high. Could that be the reason?

Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Thank you everyone for your responses. I was unaware of the setting to GMT and that would certainly explain what has been happening. I will monitor for the next couple weeks and see if there are changes in the "therapy hours" recorded. I presume that there is no way to "set it" to my location.
As for unusually high AHI and Periodic Breathing numbers, I am at a loss. I am not at high altitude and I am not experiencing leakages, etc.

Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
You can change the time on a Dream Station, but it doesn't really do anything since it appears to record GMT anyhow. I wonder adjusting that does do.kenZZZ wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2019 6:32 amThank you everyone for your responses. Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Just thought I'd mention that that in my second week in a fareast time zone the Therapy Hours which used to be 3-4 hours (despite 8 hours of sleep/cpap use) are now showing 5-6 hours. Also the AHI and Periodic breathing numbers have come down from ridiculous numbers to 4/2%. Which are higher than what I am used to but not
quite as alarming.

Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Are you just looking the the hours each morning, or are you also looking at the "three night averages" and the "seven and thirty day averages?" If it's really a time zone issue, those numbers should look more reasonable. Specifically, If you slept eight hours last night, perhaps three of them were recorded for last night, and five of them will belong to "tonight" (so you'll see five in he morning). However, if this is the same every night, you should see eight for yesterday and the day before.kenZZZ wrote: ↑Fri Sep 06, 2019 10:41 pmJust thought I'd mention that that in my second week in a fareast time zone the Therapy Hours which used to be 3-4 hours (despite 8 hours of sleep/cpap use) are now showing 5-6 hours. Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
I just went through this same thing as well, carried my dreamstation in a backpack to the Phillipines. Slept the first night and I thought I got a fairly reasonable amount of sleep for having just gotten off a 17 hour plane and travel in country, I look at my stats and says I only slept like 2.8 hours, like huh??? Anyway, I'll never travel with this whole large thing again...wasn't terrible but just clunky and time consuming to setup and break down every time from room to travel and back to room, across multiple places. Tried one night to sleep without humidifier (before the trip) but it was too damn loud without, couldn't stand for even 5 mins.

I am looking at the "Therapy Hours". But, here is an example. I am still in Japan.D.H. wrote: ↑Sat Sep 07, 2019 7:38 amAre you just looking the the hours each morning, or are you also looking at the "three night averages" and the "seven and thirty day averages?" My actual sleep time (time my CPAP was running) was between 7.5-8.0 hours.
2 nights ago my CPAP showed 4.7 hours/7.7 hours/7.8 hours for 1-7-30 days.
Last night it showed:
5.6 hours/7.6 hours/7.8 hours for the 1-7-30 days.
Re: Dreamstation numbers off during travel
Your longer than 24 hour averages seem to be correct and only the most recent 1 day number seems off and I suspect it is because the sleep session is getting split due to the machine starting a new recording period at Noon GMT time.
If you were to look at the software reports it would very likely show split sessions when they didn't exist.
Nothing you can do about it...and the long term averages will sort themselves out. Only the most recent session is showing shorter hours and tonight it will catch up.
