CPAP machine stopped working in Europe. Help!

Post by zoomzoom » Sun Sep 01, 2019 5:10 pm

I'm now almost a week into my trip to Italy (from usa) where my travel adapter (not converter) worked to convert the brick charger into something that will connect to the wall here in Europe. Tried to use machine tonight but not working.

The port in the wall is active as I can use my adapter to charge phone. Tried different lower quality adapter with CPAP and still no difference.

CPAP machine power brick maintains solid green power light as usual. When I plug in power cable to the CPAP machine itself, I see a flicker of green light (on the power button) and then it turns off. Normally this light should stay on for a moment.

What should I do? Already tried different wall plug with same results. Tried two adapters with same result.

Is it a blown fuse in my adapter? How would I even diagnose and obtain a replacement? If fuse is blown, would it even be able to charge the other devices?

Update: my travel adapter cake with a spare fuse. I used it and still the CPAP won't turn on. Same issue with the green light

If you can get your hands on a voltmeter you can check the output of the brick to see if that is working.

If the brick is good, then the problem is with the CPAP itself.

Just tried the machine again this morning period somehow, a turn-on! I did nothing to to account for this. I wonder if it was because I had too many devices plugged into the adaptor at the same time? I had disconnected the phones, so not sure if that is it. I don't mind not having a cpap, but I only brought it on my trip for the benefit of my room partner and the few nights and I'm staying at a hostel. without it, i would be disturbing the sleep of a lot of people

Well, if you'd just bought the 5 dollar proper cord to use with your cpap, you wouldn't have these problems.

Which $5 proper cable? Didn't know I was supposed to buy a new cord. Happy to buy one now and keep it for my next trip. I can only hope the machine remains in working condition with what I have now.

Sorry, maybe 7$ https://smile.amazon.com/InstallerParts ... B01DQ6RM0K but there are others.

You could also buy one over there.

If it happens again, try another electric socket. Also, your adapter might not be making the best contact. The universal adapters generally have round pins that stick way out. That design is to accommodate the recessed sockets found in most of the rest of Europe. Those sockets are grounded with either side contacts or a reverse pin.

In Italy, the sockets are not recessed. Rather the ground pin is in the middle and is the same size as the other two pins. Thus, the adapter hangs loose from the socket. You might want to get an Italy-specific adapter.
